KABUL (PAN): By the dint of a convincing eight-wicket win over Canada at
the Bready Club in Ireland on Tuesday, Afghanistan qualified for the 2012
ICC Under-19 World Cup.
In their final game, Canada won the toss and opted to bat first -- a
decision that patently backfired. They were skittled out for 71 in the 33rd
over.
The target was easily achieved by Afghans in the 15th over for the loss of
only two wickets. Syed Sherzad, Yamin Ahmadi and Abdul Basir took two
wickets apiece.
Australia also qualified for the cup.
For the winners, Javed Ahmad played a significant innings of 34 runs.
Another top-scorer for the side was Hashmatullah Shahidi, who chipped in
with a valuable 23.
Afghanistan Cricket Board Chief Executive Nasimullah Danish hailed the
outcome as a historic moment for the country. He congratulated the team
and the nation on the victory.
Afghanistan played nine matches in the tournament, winning five and losing
four.

In two years, Afghanistan is the first foreign team to play in the neighboring country,
where international matches were barred over security problems.
International cricket has been suspended in Pakistan since March 2009, when gunmen
attacked a convoy carrying the Sri Lankan squad in the metropolitan city of Lahore.
Afghans have been playing the game since around 1992 they originally learned the
game in the vast refugee camps of Pakistan. On the fall of the Taliban in 2001,
hundreds of enthusiasts came home and brought the game with them. Since then,
cricket has boomed. The game is played all around the country and its growing
popularity can been assumed by the fact that out of 34 provinces 29 have their
provincial cricket teams.

I am just too sad to see AFG Cheetahs lose those two matches in a very bad way, cause if the captain had what it takes to be a captain we would have won both of them.
