Afghan cricket team beats Namibia

August 3, 2011: Afghanistan's U-19 cricket team
win another match; national team doing well
against Canada

Afghanistan's U-19 team defeated Namibia today by 1 wicket (with 1 ball
remaining) to prevent another loss in the ICC Under-19 World Cup
Qualifiers. Namibia scored 208 runs (4.16 runs per over), and Afghanistan
scored 211 (4.23 runs per over). The player of the match award went to
Nasir Ahmadzai who scored 64 runs (not out). The second highest scorer
was Hashmatullah Shaidi with 32, followed by Shir Shirzai with 24.

Afghanistan will next play against Scotland on August 5th. Click here for

In other cricket news, Afghanistan's national cricket team is doing well
against Canada in their four-day Intercontinental Cup fixture. They are
definitely in control so far in this game. As of today, Canada is trailing by
272 runs with 6 wickets remaining in the 1st innings. The match started on

Afghanistan's national cricket team ended their four-day Intercontinental
Cup fixture against Canada by defeating them by 9 wickets. Most
commentators agree that Canada never really recovered from Hamid
Hassan's blitz on day 1. In Canada's second innings, he picked up 3 more
wickets, giving him match figures of 10 for 85. Hassan was given the man
of the match award for his outstanding playing. The team will be
celebrating the win for now, but on Sunday they will be back at it again
against Canada for the One Day International (ODI) match.

Unfortunately, the U-19 team cricket didn't do as great today. After
defeating Namibia on Wednesday by 1 wicket, they fell to Scotland today
by 33 runs in the ICC Under-19 World Cup Qualifiers. Scotland ended with
218 runs (4.36 runs per over) and Afghanistan ended with only 185 runs
(3.86 runs per over). Even though, Afsar Khan scored the most runs in the
game with 84, it still wasn't enough to win the game. However, he was
given the man of the match honors. Tomorrow, Afghanistan will take on
Kenya, hopefully, they will have better luck.

KABUL(PAN): Afghanistan trounced Kenya by nine wickets in their ICC
Under-19 World Cup Qualifier match at the Limavady Club in Ireland late on
Saturday night, the national team manager said on Sunday.

The opposition won the toss and elected to bat first in the four-day match
that was curtailed because of rain, Sher Aqa told Pajhwok Afghan News
over the telephone from Ireland.

Kenyans were restricted to 154 for the loss of five wickets in the
stipulated overs, with Vishram playing a whirlwind knock of 59 off only 40
deliveries. Patel struck an unbeaten 30 and Allan 28 to give their total a
measure of respectability.

Aqa said the national squad raced to the target in the 19th over for the
loss of only one wicket, Mangal, who could not open his account before
being sent back to the pavilion.

Javed Ahmadi smashed a quick-fire 86 at a strike rate of 169 percent and
Hashmatullah Shahidi chipped in with 63 to guide Afghanistan U-19 to a
convincing nine-wicket triumph.

KABUL (PAN): Afghanistan outclassed Vanuatu by nine wickets in their ICC
Under-19 World Cup Qualifier match at the Bready Cricket Club in Ireland
on Sunday, the national team manager said.

Having won the toss, the national team elected to bowl first, a decision that
paid off, Sher Aqa told Pajhwok Afghan News over the telephone from Ireland.

Syed Sherzad, who captured five wickets, was the pick of Afghan bowlers.
Intelligently assisted by Yamin Ahmadzai, he restricted the opposition to 111
runs in 26.2 overs.

Aqa said the national squad achieved the target in the 17th over for the loss
of only one wicket, Abdul Mangal, who scored five runs before being sent back
to the pavilion.

Javed Ahmadi rattled up an unbeaten 68 and Hashmatullah Shahidi 31 to power
Afghanistan U-19 to a convincing nine-wicket victory, the second in a row.

A day earlier, the national side humbled Nepal by a similar margin. Again, Ahmadi
and Shahidi had set the tone for Afghanistan's triumph.

Noori powers Afghanistan
to dramatic win





KABUL (PAN): Afghanistan launched their Intercontinental Cup One-Day campaign
with a dramatic two-wicket victory over Canada in Toronto, the national team
manager said on Monday.

Having won the toss, the hosts got off to a breezy start. Gunasekera hit 57 and Patel
62, providing their side a robust opening stand of 75 in the initial power-play overs,
Shafiq Stanikzai said.

Once the opening partnership was broken, Canadian batsmen seemed to struggle.
Mohammad Nabi captured four for 31 and Daulat Zadran three for 49 to restrict the
hosts to 230 in 44.5 overs.

Shabir Noori smashed an excellent 94 to set the tone for Afghanistan's triumph. He
was lent good support by Mohammad Nabi (58) and Nawroz Mangal (34).

Much to their scare, the tourists suffered a late-order collapse, going from 183 for
three to 207 for eight. They lost three wickets in one over, the manager said.

But Samiullah Shinwari and Mirwais Ashraf launched a determined damage-control
effort and saw the national squad dry and home.

This result followed their commanding nine-wicket win over the same opposition in the
four-day format of the tournament on August 5.
