Mine's pretty much the same as yours, Mayana.

The one person who certainly won't be getting a permanent nickname from me the way my parents, uncles, and other elders would be my husband; I'd call him by his real name just as I'd expect him to call me by mine. And this is regardless of his age.

I can't decide what my niece and nephew should call me! Help? I need a pretty name, nothing like "Ruth Baaji" or "Khayesta Gul."

This is how the society works: You don't talk about her in front of in-laws, you don't even acknowledge her presence in front of in-laws. LOL Unless you're leaving, then you just sayy "Darza chi zuh." That's it. If you MUST talk about her, call her by her first name. If you must talk to her, be objective.

Well.. that's how society works sometimes. I don't know how you personally would do it lol

you live in the west right? I live in New York and almost all the Kandahari girls here are born here in New York. If I were to talk to her like you said..... offensive kezhey khu ba na??

I understand we can have these cute names for our relatives but even in front of children I have noticed no sweet talking exists. The beauty of our culture?

It really depends on her and her family. Chi pa Naaz amookhta da ka yaa. My family kinda is like I described above.. but other families might be different, and more personal in these matters. You just have to see how your fiancees family is and adjust your behavior to that. Each family has politics of its own.

I think she meant her kids calling you with nicknames hahaha

Father: used to be Agha Shireen lol, then daddy, now dad if talking to him directly, but if talking with third person about my father, then it is Aba lol

Mother: used to call her with the same nickname, that her younger siblings called her, then changed to mommy, then to mom, now mostly its morai or mor

Sisters: The older sisters have special nicknames that are pretty much permanent, for the younger one it keeps changing every year lol

Brothers: Gulagha and el el gee (L.L.G)

Uncles: from dad ... kaka shireen, gul kaka, osman kaka, najeeb kaka (Khudai dai wabakhi ) from mom ... maamak, and the others by their first name followed by 'mama'

Aunts: I have one 'ama' so just call her 'ama', for khala's ... one of them simply 'khala', and the two others khalas i just call with same nickname that my mom uses for them followed by 'khala'

ME: parents mostly call me by name, but sometimes they would use a nickname which you shall not know lol, Oldest and second oldest sister call me lalagai, third call me by name, youngest also used to call me lalagai, but now it keeps changing every year or so

^ Wakh Lalagai sounds so sweet! We use Rukay in our family (extended, not immediate, as my brother only has one sister older than him).

I just started calling my dad 'Agha jan.' As i see it shows more respect coming from the oldest child.
