  • ~ Naming Etiquette.

    Salamalaikum..

Today I want to discuss with you the naming of the people around us.
How do you address your spouse, siblings, parents, aunts, uncles, cousins, grandparents, strangers?
    Let me start..

    Dad - Baba
    Mom - Bibi
Cousins my age - their respective first names/nick names
Older male cousins - X laalay, Y laalay
Uncles all have specific nick nnames, Haji Kaka, Kaka Shirin, Gol Mama etc.
Aunts all have their nicknames as well, Khala Shirina, Diljaana Ama etc. Although I do have one aunt that I call by her name.. I know I shouldn't but we're close like that and everyone does.. =/
Dad's cousins I call my their first names and add "Ama" or "Kaka" at the end.

Strangers.. usually I adress them as Khala or Kaka, when I'm asking a lady how the family is, I usually ask "Kaka mi sha day, Kor Khairyat day.. etc" and vice versa.. Or when I am asking about someone whom I'm not related to, I usually add "Khor" or "Wror" at the end. Examples: Asking your friend about their friend who just arrived from a long trip: "Jawad wror pa khair rawaraseday?"; asking about your friend' husband/fiance "Da Farhad wror Zokaam senga su?" etc.

    I like these little formalities..

What do you call the people around you?

Daa zma lewanay Zrra gorah, daa sta lewanee Mina..
Za ba da Sahra warnakam da Iran pa Golestan,
Dalta za yao & yakta yam, halta zar zma pa Shaan
    .

      Father : Agha
      Mother :Mor Jaana

When I was young my mom had assigned a nickname for all my uncles, "Shayesta Mama" etc, etc.
Even Adobe Photoshop can't change me.

A line[Durrand line] of hatred that raised a wall between the two brothers -Hamid Karzai

For generations, the Hindus of India prayed for deliverance from "the venom of the cobra, the teeth of the tiger and the vengeance of the Afghan."

The men of Kábul and Khilj also went home; and whenever they were questioned about the Musulmáns of the Kohistán (the mountains), and how matters stood there, they said, "Don't call it Kohistán, but Afghánistán; for there is nothing there but Afgháns and disturbances." Thus it is clear that for this reason the people of the country call their home in their own language Afghánistán, and themselves Afgháns. The people of India call them Patán; but the reason for this is not known. But it occurs to me, that when, under the rule of Muhammadan sovereigns, Musulmáns first came to the city of Patná, and dwelt there, the people of India (for that reason) called them Patáns—but God knows!

        Mom - moor
        everything else is pretty similar.

there is this family who calls their parents by their specific nick names, like you explained for aunts and uncles. i thought that was a little weird :P

          dad--agha or daada
          mom-maa
uncles--gul mama doctor mama sherin mama and qand mama..ibrahim kaka ismail kaka...
          aunties--have their own nicknames..
cousins--khorakai if older and anything else starting from qand all the way down to mordarkhor for the youngsters..i have one older male cousin with whom i haven't talked with for over 10 years so he is not important enough to be addressed..

Mother: Mor Jaan, Mor Jaani, Mor Jaani Qurbaani, Monnaki Jaan, Monnaki Nunnaki Jaan ... (One of my nicks for my mother sounds like banjaan ... woops).

Father: Dada Jaan, Plaar Jaan. He likes the words Abba for addressing a father, but he has never told any of us to address him that way, nor has my mother. So Dada Jaan it is.

Brother: My Dear Dearest Brother, and one of my favourite words in the Pakhto language, Lala Jaan, Awey Jaan (This has a little story behind it).

Sisters: By their names. The eldest is addressed differently.

Uncles: We have the Doctor Kaka, Doctor Mama, Agha Jaan Mama, Mashar Kaka.

Aunts: None from my fathers side, but with my Mothers it is Khala, with their nicknames.

One addition to your list, if I may Mayana, how are we addressed in our homes
