                              How could they be scared straight when they may have had no intention of being anywhere at all near what was occurring? Thats like punishing them for randomness.

                              In all probability what happened is when a father's young son or older brothers baby brother is taken like that it only enhances recruitment not diminishes it.

                              Detention at Baghram being soft? People have died there. A young man in his early 20s was picked up for being in a taxi nearn an event and tortured to death with punches. The movie made about the event was called Taxi Ride to Death or something like that.

                              You cannot scare a kid if he doesnt have a chance to begin with. Its basically telling them: you can be on your best behavior but if something happens in your village you are probably going to get picked up.
