  • Punjabies and Pashtuns, so close yet so different?

Pashtuns and Punjabies do not live far away from each other, as you can see in the map of pakistan that pashtun territory is very close to punjab, but what is the reason for their major cultural dvide, values and aswell as looks? is it because of mountains or some thing else?

really the only thing that seperates the pashtun and punjab area is the indus river, how can one river make so much difference in people? its very interesting to me

^ the difference in cultures and looks comes in because punjabies are mostly a people of the plains, like rest of north indians and pashtuns come from mostly mountain areas. There is even a much greater difference between lets say chinese and indians because of mountains in the middle, eventhough they are pretty close to each other too

also there is no one type of punjabi, in northern areas of punjab there are many people who resemble pashtuns, in southern areas they are mostly darkskinned, just like in sindh

it is interesting. when i went from turkey to iran, afghanistan, pakistan then india, the people in each of those seemed very different, to me. don't know if i met pashtuns or not but i was in herat and kandahar.

^ yeah they would be different, buts this is not unique to asia, its the same in europe. Look at the huge difference between English and French, despite being so close

also since you have travelled to Pakistan and india, what are the differences you found there?

I think the difference is obvious at the boundary (landai sin area) because each is from far away and meet here; one has heartland some where between ghazni and kandahar, the other between jalundar-lahore-amritsar. So really they are quite different and the spin garh and landai sin formed a natural border that has kept then isolated.

indians are easier for me to get along with. i spent about 3 years there, altogether.
i only spent about 5 days in pakistan because i got harassed, kicked out of a shop, for no obvious reason, molested on a train and had to go to the womens carriage, where i was also nearly stopped by a man from getting in.
i had read reports from other male and female travellers who did not have these issues in pakistan and they loved the people and the country.

im very sorry to hear that faye

its probably because pashtuns are an afghan race whereas punjabis are technically an indian race

skin differences and cultural differences will obviously be there

              take cricket for example

shoaib malik kamran akmal etc all look like some of the indian players

the only players of real difference when it comes to looks in both teams

then compare umar gul, shahid afridi junaid khan, imran khan, misbah ul haq niazi and younus khan to the rest and see a huge difference

yes i know, but typical average punjabies from the villages look like this:

ofcourse in the cities there are many punjabies who look like this for example:

^ but those are still minority and are usually related to outsiders some how

i agree that most punjabies would look like the first pic, however village or cities i am not so sure about.

When i was in school, i had a huge crush on this punjabi girl, she actually looked very similar to Kashmala Tariq there^ and guess what, she was from a small village in central punjab(Pakistan), she was a daughter of some village chaudary, so it really depends on the familes in my opinion

Kashmala Tariq has Afghan/Pashtun background. The name Kashmala is exclusively Afghan/Pashtun.

many "Punjabis" are of Pashtun descent due to Pashtun men of past having wives of Punjabi stock, this is common in Multan and Mianwali

there are even Bangladeshi Pashtuns, who are remnants of Lodhis and Sher Shah Suris men.
