  • About Jalabad....

Are there any Dari-speakers in Jalalabad?

  • #2
Yes, there are a few families....some personally who i have family relations with.

Pashto is the main language of Jalalabad and mostly spoken throughout the entire province of Nangarhar. But majority Jalalabadi's can speak both languages.

Thanks Laila. I used to buy maste from a shop owned by a Jalalabadi...He was fluent in Pashto but would talk in Dari to his kids. He told me he is Dari speaker and from some place in Nangarhar..(Surkhud or something)...I wanted to know about Jalalabad...

On way to Kabul, I passed through Jalalabad and had lunch there but didn't roam around much.

That could be so.....because Nangarhar also has a small percentage of not exactly ethnic Tajiks, but Pashais, Nuristanis, and Sikhs. Yeah there are a lot of Nangarharis that speak Dari at home.....but in Jalalabad and in majority of the entire province, Pakhto is first.

Jalalabad is nice....i like the environment of it, its not like Kabul City.

Then you must have also passed Laghman

Hay Laila, I might have been---the journey between Jalabad and Kabul was long and tiring due to the condition of the road...I think Laghman probably is near Sarobi but couldn't exactly know whether it was Laghman or not...On the way, we dined at a restraunt few yards below the road towards the river in moonlight...Also, there was a nice spring just beside the road with sweet-cold water....

But anyhow I will visit Jalabad, Laghman, Kunar, Kandahar, ...also Nuristan...

Then i am sure you passed Laghman. Because Jalalabad is 30 minutes away....and Sarobi is 15-20 minutes away. We are right in the middle.

That river is beautiful isnt it?! It is this gorgeous blue color.....ohhhh and when the sun hits it, it turns into this dark blue its so pretty.

Yes, it was really beautiful...I enjoyed the dinner in the moonlight and beside the river...

Laila I like the north very much ---the belt from Laghman-Badakhan-Kunar-Chitral all the way to Hunza, Murree, and Kashmir ---beautiful, awesome scenaries and mounaints...beautiful "patchwork" of cultures....

                  Toramana,

What were you doing in Afghanistan if you don't mind me asking. So you went there during Taliban time, bcoz it takes you about 4 hours from Torkkham to Kabul and 3 hours from Jalalabad. The roads are nice and neat now.

Let me know when you are there next, I will come and pick you up from the border. Aw samee manzereeh aw chakaroona ba wowahee.

In answer to your question, I think there is tiny Tajik community and some Arabs who speak Dari. There is another group called Sheekhmuhamdian who speak a mixture of Pashtu and Dari with a funny accent.

No I didn't see any...Once I visited a place called Bin-Shai...It is on the top of the mountain separating Jandul-Mayar (in Dir district) from Kunar...It was summer but at the top the whether was cold...There were lot of horses being used for transportation between Kunar and Dir...I guessed that there were a lot of forests in Kunar---and that it was kind of narrow valley---Up, towards the north-east, mountains of Chitral were visible....Anyhow, good memories....

In Peshawar, there is Muhallah (street) adjacent to the University Town where Hazarbuz live, who are Kochis I think now settled and turned to trade....

Dari-speakers are in every province of Afghanistan. Pashto speakers are also in every province of Afghanistan. In Jalalabad, the majority speaks Pashto. Pashto serves as the lingua-franca.

A line[Durrand line] of hatred that raised a wall between the two brothers -Hamid Karzai

For generations, the Hindus of India prayed for deliverance from "the venom of the cobra, the teeth of the tiger and the vengeance of the Afghan."

The men of Kábul and Khilj also went home; and whenever they were questioned about the Musulmáns of the Kohistán (the mountains), and how matters stood there, they said, "Don't call it Kohistán, but Afghánistán; for there is nothing there but Afgháns and disturbances." Thus it is clear that for this reason the people of the country call their home in their own language Afghánistán, and themselves Afgháns. The people of India call them Patán; but the reason for this is not known. But it occurs to me, that when, under the rule of Muhammadan sovereigns, Musulmáns first came to the city of Patná, and dwelt there, the people of India (for that reason) called them Patáns—but God knows!
