    Khan comes really from Turkic and Mongolian.

    In Mongolian Khaan means a quiet big ruler if i am not wrong, because smaller rulers are called Noyon

      It is a bit a confusion with this -Yan ending.
      Almost every Armenian would say You yes, but I won't.
      You are right, like 80% of armenians endings of familynames is -Yan, but we have no history with this ending at all. it is a recent development. Before people identified with their ancestors and didn't have a fixed familyname, buut then every armenian got almost standartized to -yan.

      Actually the our last names should finish with -ents, -unts, -ants, but today only few have this kind of names.
      In fact my family had a name on ants but changed to yan some 100 years ago, they were forced to do that.

      In more ancient times (i mean really ancient), we had also a tribal culture but it then got lost because we entered the Parthian state and they influenced our culture.
      before the Parthians our tribes hade the endings with -az (the root of "tribe), the most famous is the Haykaz tribe - Haykazuni.
      Later famous tribes formed the noblemen under the Parthians, they exist till today and have familynames on -uni( Artsruni, Slkuni, Amatuni, Rshtuni...)
      And Armenized Parthians more ofthen had names ending on -akan or -yan
      while -unts etc. where the endings for more simple people.
      Today some Armenians, specially from Baku, Tbilissi and Rostov have familynames on -ov and some from Turkey on -ic or -oghly

        The Hazara people as well Turkic people in north Afghanistan, the people who actually originate from steppe nomadic tribes that were Turkic and Mangolian in origin, why is it that Khan is never used among those people? Why is Dustom not Dustom khan?

            Khan has many other varieties (Xan, Han etc. stretching across Central Asia from Turkey to China and so on), and like the commentators here already have said, it means something in the region of lord, prince, etc.

            Not so easy to see where the long vowel sound is when I write it in English. Compare:
            بچه with باچا
            One is bacha (child); the other is Baacha as in Bacha Khan or Haroon Bacha etc.

            پاچا = باچا
            Bacha = Pacha
            (It's dialectical, rather than completely different)

            that would be the same as بادشاه = پادشاه (Padshah = Badshah)

              You're correct, when you write Dari/Pashtu in English its not going to be the exact word as its originally pronounced. I stand corrected. Thanks.

                Hey Tor Khan, thanks for your insight on this topic, but now i ask, how can Pacha come from bacha. I know they sound the same but Bacha means "boy" in Farsi so that's where the confusion picks up. My father told me that Pacha and Badshah are completely separate from each other so i took his word for it. However you provided evidence so i will believe you.

                  My grand dukes was named Juma Khan KhaderKhel. He came from the tribal areas, and like what Master Khan said its mostly a second part of your first name following your sub tribe.

                    Because they keep closer the sense of this word. Khan is a big ruler, so obviously not everybody will become Khan. Turks have lower titles like Bay(Bey) and Bek (Beg)....

                        To bring another analogy, like Pashtuns use Khan almost every second Pamirians last name contains "Sho" (=Shah).
                        Although Pamarians are small groups of mountainous people and surely have no Shah, but still they use it.
                        They have also names like Muboraksho, Olimsho, Maksudsho....

                          Its because of illiteracy among Pashtuns.

                          There are many mispronounced farsi words in pashto.

                          Awdas = aab dast

                          Maas khutan = namaaz e khuftan

                            And Turkic people really often use Bek and Bay- go to Kazakhstan or Uzbekistan or Kyrghyzstan and you find a lot of Donenbaev, Talambaev, Alimbaev, Arslanbekov, Rizabekov...... (they now use the -ov ending, which is a Russian possesive ending)
