  • June 11, 1963, Thich Quang Duc, a Buddhist monk from Vietnam, burned himself to death at a busy intersection in downtown Saigon to bring attention to the repressive policies of the Catholic Diem regime that controlled the South Vietnamese government at the time. Buddhist monks asked the regime to lift its ban on flying the traditional Buddhist flag, to grant Buddhism the same rights as Catholicism, to stop detaining Buddhists and to give Buddhist monks and nuns the right to practice and spread their religion.
While burning Thich Quang Duc never moved a muscle.

      • "To kill for murder is an immeasurably greater evil than the actual crime itself. Judicial murder is immeasurably more horrible than one committed by a robber. Someone killed by a robber, knifed at night in forest or somewhere, certainly keeps hoping for a rescue right up to the last second. There have been instances of people whose throats have been cut still hoping for rescue right up to the last second. There have been instances of people whose throats have been cut still hoping, or running away, or pleading for their lives. But all this final hope, which makes dying ten times easier is taken away by that certain; the sentence is pronounced and the whole agony resides in the fact that there’s no escape. There is no greater torture in the world than that. Fetch a soldier and stand him right in front of a cannon during a battle and fire at him, he’ll go on hoping; but read out a certain death sentence to that same soldier and he’ll go off his head or bust into tears. Who can say that human nature can bear such a thing like that without going mad? Why this disgusting pointless, unnecessary mockery? Perhaps there exists a man who has had his sentence read out to him and been allowed to suffer before being told: “Be off, you’ve been pardoned.” That man could tell you perhaps. Christ himself spoke of such agony and terror. No, a man should not be treated so!”

I just dont understand how someone can take ones own life like that. The most painful of ways! Also did they achieve anything by doing that?

The Islamic concept of struggle is much more realistic, when you are being oppressed

i can't say i understand what he did but the fact that not a single muscle moved while his flesh turned in to ashes says a thing or two about the sort of control he had over his mind.
i also thought about it while driving this morning. maybe in his mind he was convinced that no one was going to give him the freedom he fought for and existing after that point wasn't only pointless but disgraceful according to his principals and beliefs. he didn't want to share this planet with these people anymore so while he had reached that certain point in his mind, he refused to exist and on his way out he left an impression like that on the individuals who witnessed what he did that day.
the atrocity of the act made his cause somewhat prominent. he cold have hanged himself or starve himself to death and i doubt that anyone would have remembered his story. he did to himself what everyone else does to do others for their own cause.
i don't know..i am still thinking about it.
