Lol spies? WTF kind of non sense is that. Translators only translate Pashto to English and vice versa. Translators only translate what American soldiers tell them to say to the individual, and translate what the individual responds back.
spies are people who go behind enemy lines and report what is going on. Spies place tracking devices to drones, and give out coordinates to where troops should attack.

What propaganda have you listened to. Too much al-emara radio for you.

NO, those translators are not plain everyday communicators of language.

At minimum they are likely to be asked for personal impressions of the person being interrogated, as well as to survey situations and report back.

Perhaps they are encouraged at times to attempt to befriend target people so as to gather information.

There are many grey-area categories, quite more complex than what I wrote here, I'm sure.

I have a family member who works as a linguist in Bagram prison, and all they do is translate. The Americans never ask them for their opinions on them. Though they said that most prisoners are innocent people, they have no say on the matter.

Probably in Bagram there are more specialists that Americans can consult
          I'm guessing, I don't have any information.

You have more than I do.

I bet in Paktia and regional areas, they have to rely more on the translators.

Why did your family member accept such a job?
Does he not feel bad about witnessing all the torture and all that?

I have family scattered all over south and east Afghanistan. My family members who go have no choice, they have lost jobs, businesses. They have mortgage bills or bum husbands. most of them say that ANA soldiers and police treat prisoners worser then the Americans. Though they claim they have never witness a prisoner get tortured by American forces.

If Talib prisoners don't got a problem, as long as the linguist is Pashtun, no one should.
There is something to be said however about assisting the occupier; although Taliban and Americans are both ultimately enemies of us all.

^ LOL @ "accept the label." Funny. You sound a bit too angry there, UnknownPrince. Khair kho dey? What makes you think you can impose your ideas on others? Good luck with that -- especially among Pashtuns

@ Idiot: I think you'd be crazy to let others tell you whether you're Pashtun or not, or whether what your family members are doing is acceptable or unacceptable. Ignore the remarks. Their opinions don't change the realities. People who themselves have evil intentions with every action they commit, every thought that travels through their mind assume that every single person must be like that. They don't have the ability to consider the various possibilities of a person's action, hence refusing to understand why someone WOULD work as a translator for whoever/whatever.

In my opinion, no one's more beghairat than the cowards like them.

So my advice to you: Ignore them; let them continue bickering among themselves.

Please say something positive...you are always on a negative note...These translators are at least benefiting Afghanistan....you on the contrary are supporting entities that are destroying schools, bridges, etc.

This guy obviously doesn't know what the hell is going on in afghanistan. if their were no translators, how would villagers communicate with soldiers? How would the villagers express their conditions there in? How would prisoners argue their innocence?

I don't understand how someone could be so heartless. how someone could storm in someones house and translate what they are saying. Translators all justify the war against Pashtuns, which is exactly why they are sold out. For the money, they sell their imaan. I know many translators who were stationed in Afghanistan. Many are non-Pashtun because Pashtuns refuse to go, Pashtun refuse to translate their people while they are being tortured and interrogated since Americans assume they are Taliban just cause they are tall and have a beard.
Yea many are Tajiks and Uzbeks, but would you rather they translate a language that they don't speak?

You think translators have any say or where and to whom houses they search? Arrest? If they weren't any translators or non-Pashtun ones do you belief it would make what Soldiers do in villages any more easier. Like I said I have multiple family members stationed in all front lines and you honestly belief it would be better if the villagers have no one to translate their plight too? Have you ever been to Kandahar? Not the city?

Your telling me you would rather lose your house then to be a linguist? Am calling bs because you are not in that position.

Of course they have a say. It's the translators who tell the American what he is or she is saying. If a translator says I am a Taliban, I am sent to the bay for years without any charge.

No matter what position I am in, I would never join hands and walk around with an army to fill up my pocket. Especially if they invaded my country. If your not a Pashtun, you wouldn't care. Since it's not your country. I'd rather live poor than make money over the blood of my people. I have a heart. I have nang and I am not begairat like translators who are chasing money by storming in Pashtun houses at 2am waking up the children and asking where the Taliban are. The irony.......
Once you lose a job that you have been working for 20 years then all take you serious on this matter, once you lose a business you have been operating for 20 years all take you serious. And lastly, if you get married to a bum and have four kids with no job all take you serious. I was once same as you saying linguist are evil, but I don't have kids to feed.

If you are ever in one of these situations, which I hope you won't be, and then choose not to be a linguist; then that I would respect that decision, and your stance. You think my family members willingly and lovely leave their kids to live in FOB base? You think they like going into firefights?
