Khashayar, you are not the first person to think of this.
This is thread is solely for the appreciation of Islamic architecture. No-one is endorsing anything here, please keep the politics out.
If you want to discuss whether extravagent mosques should not be built make a thread in the religion forum, but this thread is in art & photography.
Now, I agree that it is not a good use of money but then there are many things in society which are not a good use of money. Why not limit army spending, or space exploration or gambling? etc
The Islamic architecture at least defines the Muslim community. There is no obligation for mosques to be so extravagent. The dome was traditionally used to magnify the imam's voice and the minaret for similar reasons. Now we have loudspeakers so this stuff is not needed anymore. You hear of kings building their own private mosques and adorning them with gold etc but a mosque is not defined by how pretty it looks. As long as Muslims can gather round and pray to Allah then that is a mosque.
But having said that we are not discussing the politics of mosques, only their appearance. If you want to debate whether these are morally right then this is not the place to do it.---

I cannot remember properly but I think I heard that whoever builds a mosque gains the sawob (praise) of all who attend it or something. In any case that is very good to hear emkhan.---

Indeed, here is a very nice one (lot's of pictures this time).
Hassan II Mosque (Casablanca, Morroco)

A great image of the huge mosque by the city (provided link since image was too large)
This is definately one of my favourite mosques here due to its sheer size, attention to detail and its location.
Some summary info:
- It is located on the coast of the Atlantic Ocean in Casablanca, Morroco.
- It is huge! It can hold over 100,000 worshippers.
- It is the largest mosque in Morocco and the 5th largest in the world.
- Its huge minaret is the tallest in the world (almost 700ft).
- It was only completed in 1993 believe it or not!
- It was built on reclaimed land and almost half of the surface of the mosque lies over the Atlantic water.
- This was inspired by the verse of the Qur'an that states "the throne of Allah was built on water."
- It was built to withstand earthquakes and has a heated floor, electric doors, and a sliding roof.
- It was built for the 60th anniversary of the King of Morroco, Hassan II.
