Samakand is one of the great ancient cities, I wish to go there some time.

If there is demand for it I could post a little factfile summarising the history of each mosque?

The images in the links are the best ones. Please take some time to look at them.

This may not be the typical big domed eccentric mosque but it has a great history.

So, the mosque was built in 670 CE by Sahabi Uqba ibn Nafir when the city of Kairouan was founded in Tunisia. He was a general who began the Islamic conquest of the Maghreb. He used this new city as a base to mount operations. The mosque then became an important center for Islamic and Quranic learning, and attracted a huge number of Muslims from all around the the world. It contributed much to the culture & architecture of Islam in the area & became the model for future mosques in the Maghreb & North African Islamic architecture. It is recognised as the first mosque in the first town of Islam in the West.

You might not think it's much to look at but it has its own personality and has its significance in Islamic history. Without it you would not have such beautiful mosques in Spain, Algeria, and the rest of the Maghreb. Mosques are not just about looking pretty with nice colours. Imo it's sheer size and architectural beauty more than makes up for its lack of exterior decorations.

some of those are lovely, with the carved stonework but that modern spikey look doesn't appeal to me.

Ancienne Mosquée du Vendredi (Moroni, Comorros Islands)

This was a hard find. Not your typical humungous gold domed mosque. See how hard I work to bring you unique images of unknown mosques?

                            So a little info:

Comorros is a nation consisting of 4 main islands (although one of them is STILL under French Colonial rule) in the Indian Ocean just above Madagascar:

The capital of the Comorros is Moroni which is also the largest city and where the mosque is situated (it is also called the Moroni Mosque). It is a largely unknown mosque as is the country which is why after alot of searching I couldn't find any info on the mosque (even looking at my world encyclopaedia) so I will post what I know of the country and speculate as to the mosque's history.

I know that the Islamic presence was spread here peacefully by merchants trading with Africa, Arabia and South-East Asia. Hence the Arab architecture present in the country (about 16th Century this was). Then the French empire came along and colonised it and still has a presense there after all these years. It declared independence from France in 1975. It has a weak economy with not enough food to supply itself let alone to export. There is also a large hindu presense with 68% being descendents of Indian plantation workers.

The mosque is called 'ancient' although I would say it is probably as old as the Arab presence there (complete speculation).

Got this info from my encylopadeia
