  • The Return of CENTCOM

The propaganda minister CENTCOM has returned to spread disinformation on behalf of the U.S. Military to justify its imperialism.

As far this incident goes, we reiterate whatMajor Adam Wojack, a spokesman for ISAF, said:"We take all allegations of civilian casualties seriously and we are currently assessing the incident to determine more facts." The U.S. is working very hard with the Afghan National Security Forces (ANSF) to make Afghanistan a better place for its people. The changes taking place today were simply unimaginable over a decade ago. Could we have imagined a democratically elected government during the Taliban regime? In-fact, the country remains considerably more peaceful and united than it has been for most of the past 40 years. The truth is that Afghanistan continues to take steps towards a safe and bright future.

This is some fascinating information regarding this CENTCOM project:
            -----------------------------------------------------------------
            <A href="http://www.npr.org/blogs/thetwo-way/2011/03/17/134631649/report-u-s-creates-fake-online-identities-to-counter-enemy-propaganda" target=_blank>Report: U.S. Creates Fake Online Identities To Counter 'Enemy Propaganda' : The Two-Way : NPR

The U.S. Military hired a California company to create software that allows one person to control up to 10 different and sophisticated fake online personas.

The Guardian reported today that United States Central Command (Centcom) doesn't plan to use the program domestically. Instead, the paper reports quoting Bill Speaks, Centcom spokesman, the military wants to use it in the Middle East and Asia to "counter violent extremist and enemy propaganda outside the US."

            The Guardian adds:

Revealed: US spy operation that manipulates social media | Technology | The Guardian

The discovery that the US military is developing false online personalities – known to users of social media as "sock puppets" – could also encourage other governments, private companies and non-government organisations to do the same.
The Centcom contract stipulates that each fake online persona must have a convincing background, history and supporting details, and that up to 50 US-based controllers should be able to operate false identities from their workstations "without fear of being discovered by sophisticated adversaries".
Centcom spokesman Commander Bill Speaks said: "The technology supports classified blogging activities on foreign-language websites to enable Centcom to counter violent extremist and enemy propaganda outside the US."
He said none of the interventions would be in English, as it would be unlawful to "address US audiences" with such technology, and any English-language use of social media by Centcom was always clearly attributed. The languages in which the interventions are conducted include Arabic, Farsi, Urdu and Pashto.
            -----------------------------------------------------------------

I dont know why CENTCOM or insurgent folks would want to post at PF because its a western based forum with its location in the United States. The members posting are in the West without any links or abilities to influence outcomes abroad. The average country side Afghan or FATA folks still get info via radio so it doesnt reach them. A few members in Pakistan or Kabul who are also well to do are members but they also are not involved in any significant way that influences the war's outcome.

Its really ridiculous that they pay someone to do this all day. Active military members like SiiNii do a better job interacting than them anyway.

telling the truth is not propaganda, though. obviously, they object to that too, even when it is coming from americans and american articles, including their own veterans.

                ah....i see.
[The project has been likened by web experts to China's attempts to control and restrict free speech on the internet. Critics are likely to complain that it will allow the US military to create a false consensus in online conversations, crowd out unwelcome opinions and smother commentaries or reports that do not correspond with its own objectives.]

The multiple persona contract is thought to have been awarded as part of a programme called Operation Earnest Voice (OEV), which was first developed in Iraq as a psychological warfare weapon against the online presence of al-Qaida supporters and others ranged against coalition forces. Since then, OEV is reported to have expanded into a $200m programme and is thought to have been used against jihadists across Pakistan, Afghanistan and the Middle East.
                  200m?!?!

BTW, kitabtoon is a place for books (kitab - book, toon - one of formative suffixes using to create names of the places), not for book covers.
Is it clear that you are not welocme here ?

Is it clear? Not really. And could you please clarify and elaborate a bit on what you mean by "it is a place for books". I believe you may have misunderstood the post. It is not about a book cover but rather making a mention or an introduction to forum readers of a book by a well known Afghan writer who brings to life popular folk culture of urban Kabul during the mid-twentieth century through short stories in the book. As an Afghan I very much appreciate the fact that our rich culture is being introduced to English readers around the world. I am not certain why this would be bothersome to you.
But it would be nice if we could have an intelligent and civilized conversation about it without remarks such as "you are not welcome here" or "find yourself another website".

Intelligent and civilized? Pashtuns are quite civilized and a very wise and intelligent people, Aria, probably moreso than many others.
