  • Happy Easter Good People!!!

I found this forum one day while I was out conducting explorations in cyberspace. I'm relieved to say the least. Now I know where to find e-Pashtun tribesmen from the safety of my own kitchen table. Now I can intermingle amongst you people without the need to grow a small shrub on my face or the requirement of a small-to-medium sized armed militia. This is truly a great time in my life. I anxiously await the inevitable fruitful and enlightening conversations to come and a mutually beneficial exchange of ideas. May the Owl god Moloch be with you.

    Welcome.
Even Adobe Photoshop can't change me.

A line[Durrand line] of hatred that raised a wall between the two brothers -Hamid Karzai

For generations, the Hindus of India prayed for deliverance from "the venom of the cobra, the teeth of the tiger and the vengeance of the Afghan."

The men of Kábul and Khilj also went home; and whenever they were questioned about the Musulmáns of the Kohistán (the mountains), and how matters stood there, they said, "Don't call it Kohistán, but Afghánistán; for there is nothing there but Afgháns and disturbances." Thus it is clear that for this reason the people of the country call their home in their own language Afghánistán, and themselves Afgháns. The people of India call them Patán; but the reason for this is not known. But it occurs to me, that when, under the rule of Muhammadan sovereigns, Musulmáns first came to the city of Patná, and dwelt there, the people of India (for that reason) called them Patáns—but God knows!

    -Ferishta, 1560–1620

No genius, Finnish ("Finnskiy" in your language). Is 'tuomittu elämään' German? Does it even remotely resemble any Germanic language structurally? The A umlaut is represented in numerous European languages: Swedish, Finnish, Estonian, Slovak.

Actually "Umlaut" is a German word, my Finish friend.

          The only constant is change.

Wow thanks for the hint! I had no idea until you informed me. See, I'm learning new things everyday. But no points off for trying, I'll give you 5 points for honest effort.

Seriously, in Finnish the umlaut is referred to as ääkköset but in modern day the German loan word equivalent, umlaut, is used with more frequency.

You seem to be an interesting person.
What are your impressions of Pashtuns?

I have never been to Finland but it seems to be a great country. I would love to be there one day.

Can you tell us something more about Owl god Moloch?

Badlun, okay, this is my first serious post on here. I've seen your posts and I respect a number of your views. You have a distinctly different character than the majority of Pashtuns. I should tell you right now, that bit about the Owl god Moloch meant nothing, just me indulging in my own bizarre sense of humor, an absolute joke. At least half of my personality is rooted in irony, cynicism and sarcasm. I'm from Tampere in southern Finland but currently at Vanderbilt University in North America. My interest in Pashtuns was random. I've been interested in cultural anthropology and people of the world since I was a young teenager. I was intrigued by Central Asia and the region loosely referred to as Turkestan early on and later focused my research on Afghanistan. It's unique history seemed to be unparalleled by not only it's neighbors but possibly the entire eastern world. As far as I'm concerned the Pashtuns are easily the most intriguing group in the region, maybe even the world in modern day. The mere fact that the tribal system is still intact and holds the degree of socio-political relevance that it does in large portions of Afghanistan is intriguing in modern day.

I am, of course, aware of similar social structures existing in rural Yemen and much of Somalia but from my knowledge, which is probably deficient, these do not really compare to what exists in Afghanistan, nor are these people's customs and culture quite as complex and intriguing as that of the raw Pashtun tribesman that has never left the region.

Regarding my general impression of Pashtuns. Well, I can say both good and bad things... I have more respect for them collectively as an ethnic group than any of the neighboring ethnic groups. My reasons are extensive and complex. Simultaneously, my view of Pashtuns is clouded by personal hatred of Abrahamic religions and Islam plays a significant role in the average Pashtun's life and how he interacts with the world around him. This gets further complicated when one considers that many customs practiced by certain Pashtuns are diluted, corrupted and not even necessarily from Islam but is believed to be by those engaging in the acts (i.e. using human lives/trading women to settle feuds, murdering others in retribution for a perceived wrong without trial by an unbiased outside party, countless other examples). Actually, many of these things that are perceived as backwards or barbaric by the outside world contribute to the intrigue factor.

I respect and revere your people as warriors and your martial history. Regarding warriors, the last time a people on that level of greatness ruled Scandinavia was during the Viking era (to which, ironically, Finns were not even a part of, we were separated by language as well as our pantheon of gods was universally different from the Norse/Germanic tribes). I can respect a warrior but only to an extent. There is more to life than martial competency and perpetual war, at least there should be. And this seems to be an area where Pashtuns often see things differently. I'm certainly not a pacifist and believe that violence is necessary in many situations. However, I get the impression that often Pashtuns are too eager to hold on to self-conceived notions of "pride" (pointless arrogance) to see the larger picture in a given situation and would rather resort to use of violent force than explore more rational options.

If it is relevant to anyone, I'm staunchly opposed to foreign intervention in the affairs of Afghanistan and any land or people anywhere for that matter. No matter how strongly I disagree with the events transpiring somewhere, I believe that the way to help a people would be through humanitarian aid and perhaps allowing refuge for those people who are non-partisans in a land of violent conflict. As an anarchist, I categorically reject military interventionalism on all levels. I don't have any grand solutions for the complex problems plaguing humanity across the world today but I know that military intervention is generally the very worst thing that could happen to anyone.

Good one sir. When you find this elusive Finnish Lion, let me know. Maybe should try the snide nationalist angle on someone that cares or at least gives relevance to those things. I have no "national" pride nor do I care much about where in the world I originated.
