It isn'T dear Randolph, it has surely certain influence - but Russia will never become part of the West , it is imposible.
However , this "East" and "West" are fictive terms, the do not exsist in reality.

Unfortunately I do not know many Ossetic words to show anything.
Child of the land did a good job in this sense.

Generally Ossetic is part of "EASTERN IRANIC" languages.
Iranic splitted already in ancient times in eastern and western(Avestan and ancient Persian).
However Ossetians derive from Sarmatians, who were living in the region of south Russia and West Kazakhstan already in ancient times.
Ossetians have a quiet well conserved epical tradition, but unfortunately I didn't read or hear it.
The east Iranic languages are further divided in Northern and Southern branches.
The northern consists of Ossetian dialects and Yaghnobi language(the Yaghnab valley people are remainings of Sogdians and live in Tajikistan).
The southern branche consists of Pashto and various Pamirian languages(Shugni, Ishkashimi, Yazgulami....)

The similarities increase in the following direction:
Ossetian<Yaghnobi<Pamirian dialects<Pashto


for today Ossetian will be already to different from Pashto s they are both border languages of estern iranic.
Pashto has a lot of sounds tipical for its region, and Ossetic has sounds tipical for its region.
So similarities you can see more in written language.
I am not that informed on ossetic and unfortunately there are no good books online to download.
What I can do is post some material in Russian on Yaghnobi language and some dictionaries of Pamir languages.

How can anyone who claim to be a Russian have an avatar of a Georgian who murdered millions of Russian (30 million) and who deported nearly every minority in Russia from Tatars in Crimea, Germans in Volga to Chechens to Siberia, Kazahstan etc. Even his own people, Georgians.

Communism is dead and will never exist. It's a faillure of a ideology. There is no communist state anymore, not even China, Vietnam nor Cuba. Both have realised that it can not succeed in it's purest form.

And Arevapasht is right, Russia is a very different society to the West because is consist of 150 differnet peoples. Real Russia is only the area near Moscow the reast is minorities, Siberians, Caucasus, Cossakh, Ugro-Finnic Peoples, Ukrainians, Tatars, Poles, Germans etc.

And the people our Armenian friend is referring to are Buddhists you live in the Astrakhan province close to the Caspian Sea and the Volga River. There are only a million of them.
