              Welcome, Bernard Khan!
Even Adobe Photoshop can't change me.

A line[Durrand line] of hatred that raised a wall between the two brothers -Hamid Karzai

For generations, the Hindus of India prayed for deliverance from "the venom of the cobra, the teeth of the tiger and the vengeance of the Afghan."

The men of Kábul and Khilj also went home; and whenever they were questioned about the Musulmáns of the Kohistán (the mountains), and how matters stood there, they said, "Don't call it Kohistán, but Afghánistán; for there is nothing there but Afgháns and disturbances." Thus it is clear that for this reason the people of the country call their home in their own language Afghánistán, and themselves Afgháns. The people of India call them Patán; but the reason for this is not known. But it occurs to me, that when, under the rule of Muhammadan sovereigns, Musulmáns first came to the city of Patná, and dwelt there, the people of India (for that reason) called them Patáns—but God knows!

thank you for the "pa khair raghley".

                    manana.

I am experiencing the Pashtun melmastia first hand. I am truly grateful.

Admin Khan has been very helpful to me.

the play is about the secret spy wars during the soviet invasion of Afghanistan.

I play a tribal leader called Abdullah Khan. I have a son named Saeed.

the play spans from 1981 to 1991.

the american spy comes to me because I am a moderate and trusted man. I am only interested in defending my home. I am not a fundamentalist.

yet during the play my son is killed by the Najibullah forces. this radicalizes me and I then join forces with Gulbuddin Hekmatyar to avenge my son's death.

my son is everything to me.

throughout the play I have been a fierce opponent of Hekmatyar. so it is a huge compromise my joining forces with him. yet my anger at what happens to my son feeds my vengeance.

the play is all about trust and deception and family. the power of family. the need for family.

what we will do to defend our families.

it shows the human side of the war. it shows the exploitation of Afghanistan. it sheds light and gives context to the tragedies that continue to plague Afghanistan.

I want to show the dignity and the bravery and the humanity of this wonderful character I have been honored to play.

I want the Afghan and especially the Pashtun community to be pleased.

this is very important to me.

please if any one has any thoughts or suggestions to help my work, I would be very grateful.

                    dera manana. . .

Alright ...so you are doing research for your role I suppose. And I guess going to Afghanistan to get a first hand taste is a bit far fetched. So I ll give you some pointers for your role ...
When you think of an Afghan, think of lions. Extremely territorial. Protector of the Pride, family, in other words ghairaty. Unlike the english men and the indians, the afghan mind is less propone to philosophize on life. Everything is in black and white. Right and wrong are obvious and a given. There is very little room for gray or doubt. In the wild jungle, morality is as plain as life and death. Weakness and meagerness in a leader is sin and a shame...like Karzai for example. Selfishness and faithlessness in a leader is an abomination ...like gulbudin.
I ll think of more for later ...

                          this is very helpful.

I wish I could go to Afghanistan.

I have been walking daily in the hills of Griffith Park in Los Angeles. I pretend like it is Afghanistan. the hollywood freeway is the khyber pass.

Welcome and I have to say the story sounds good and realistic, in Afghanistan anyways.. Can you tell us who wrote it and when and where its playing?

In the mind of the Pashtun, it never rests until the death has been avenged. All he thinks about is avenging it and devising the many ways it could be avenged, he does not care how impossible the task nor how long it takes. He is neither shy nor ashamed of this feeling and expresses this with zeal. He makes sure that if he fails, that his next of kin would continue until the deed is done no matter how many lives it takes.
The animosity between your character and Hekmatyar is forgotten and you are like brothers until the greater deed(the vengence) is done. If your character is a man of honor, everything is done straight forward, there is no deception. Your enemy knows your intentions and you make no effort to hide it. You keep going and never rest as if your life depends on avenging your sons death but at the same time you are patient.

Ill try to think of more but ask questions. If you meet any Pashtuns, make sure you ask if they have lived in rural Afghanistan because the pampered city folk aren't going to understand your character who is a rough, stubborn, unbreakable rural tribal Pashtun.

Im not a Pashtun but I would advice you to read in English the poem about Amir Kror and take seriously every word. You may also try Pashto version. It's beautifufl! I forgot the English title, but Im sure someone could help you to find it. It starts from the words زه يم زمری "ze yem zmaray" - I am a lion...
It's all about Pashtun pride, bravery, courage, love of freedom... and Pashtuns are like this.
My professors says that the poem describes Pashtuns perfectly and that every invader should read it carefuly before he decides to invade Afghanistan. The problem is that invaders or politicians take into account only political or economical aspects forgetting all cultural background. But it's another story.
                              Good luck!
