By the way, this pic of the three, taken Feb 4, 1991 according to one caption was used for a major [front page, perhaps] article in 2008 by The Washington Times newspaper. It was about the dangerous threat posed by "the Haqqanis".
They didn't even mention the names of the other two notable figures.
It shows how little Americans really care about learning who any Afghans are !
Or to unravel what each Commander was all about, or what was happening at that time the photo was taken. They lack any curiosity to have a deeper understanding beyond the merest surfaces.

I first saw the pic on a blog called something like Faces of Our Enemies.
Who first of all, is "our" - ?
A former US military guy had drawn this up to acquaint the American public with its "enemies" - it's absolutely laughable.
I couldn't find the blog - I hope he took it off due to lack of interest, or ineptitude.
For, the ex-marine wrote as the caption for this pic something like:

"Jalaluddin Haqqani, center; an aide to him on the right; some other Pashtun on the left hand."

I just laughed to see the ignorance of someone avowedly trying to educate Americans as to the complexities of the American-Afghan war 17 years after the picture had been taken. I recognized Amin Wardak and the other commander as Abdul Haq.
That latter Abdul Haq, was not my favorite, at least from what I remember from earlier days, of the antiSoviet jihad. That's a different story. But here the Commanders were meeting obviously to help the process of bringing peace.

The Washington Times skips right over that and plays up the element of frightening dangerous terrorists.

When Amin Wardak is not at all involved in armed struggle. He has stated this to the French media, as far as I am aware.

So this is an example of how especially conservative circles in the US media try to fuel American fears by misusing evidence. Plus leaving out relevant information which would make Maulavi Jelaluddin seem like a great guy. for example: a responsible, rational, leader working to further the cause for peace in Afghanistan in that decade.

And to NOT recognize Amin Wardak shows how ignorant the policymakers and American so-called media experts are. Certainly French media would not caption him merely as "another Pashtun". It's laughable!
Anyone in France who knows about Afghanistan would recognize him immediately.

By the way, Maulavi Jelaluddin doesn't look any too fearsome either with the ear to ear smile!
These editors don't have a clue how to 1) choose
        2) label the illustrations they select for their articles.

Re Amin W.: be continued Thursday Inshallah.....

There is a gigantic Wardak population in my near city in California. They are majority from Maidan Shar.

            Very intelligent, respectful people

                    Re Sk,
                    What did you hear exactly?
I assume Amin has been under terrific pressure to make statements which won't offend the rather aggressively anti-Islamic French govt under Sarkoczy.

I am not sure, myself of the whole story, but I know the French are under the thumb of America during this decade [what a reversal from the de Gaulle era!].

So he probably has to issue only the blandest of statements or lose his residency, perhaps.
That's my reading through the lines.
I was trying to figure this point out before writing up a summary.

                    It's such a rare picture.
Yeah, if you look closely at Jelaluddin's eyes, one can catch his special character.
Fahd has nicely given us a large version so we can see the expression.

I am grateful to Fahd for digging up such pix and posting them, as I probably would take another year to figure out the process here on PF! [I'm very dumb with computers]

Kyaal that's ridiculous - look at Jelaluddin's eyes.
He's no one's lackey, EVER EVER!
Who else would have had the strength to say NO to America on the eve of the invasion?
I still remember wandering into a Peet's Tea in California and seeing his statement on the newspaper headline regarding this.
He said in an interview that the Afghans would defeat the US.
What has apparently happened? His prophecy was upheld. DESPITE ALL ODDS!
Who would have believed that THEN, in autumn 2001?

I know members of Amin Wardaks tribe. And one of them told me recently that Amin Wardak is no longer on their side.

Could be that the comfort of the life in a modern Westrern country have influenced his views.

Thanks for the input, but he is so patriotic I can't imagine that he would abandon his tribe.

He probably hates living in France, actually, and is waiting for the day to go back.

Another fact in his favor - from my angle - is that, according to his biographer, I believe it was she who wrote this - the French media have largely ignored or dropped him
                        That is a POSITIVE!
If he were collaborating with NATO, they would be tearing down his door to get interviews.
Obviously he doesn't agree with the occupation, which is very important.

Beyond that, I'm not sure what he sees for the future.

It MAY be that he favors elections/democracy. Could THIS be why those tribal members saying that?

Let's figure out, because this is important.

No matter what, he was a great hero from the Soviet days and this contribution should never be forgotten the way it has been by nearly all, inside Afghanistan and the newer generations growing up now in the West.

I like that he has never backed down from making good statements about Jelaluddin.
Imagine the huge pressure from all the West to denounce him as "an enemy". Amin did not succumb to that, which to me is especially admirable. The rest, I'm not sure where he stands exactly, and would like to know.

But he still has the option of internet Jihad (or killing infidels in video games) just like Catya Shehr. LOL

                              !!!

                              Khyaal, you never learn.

I'm too out of it re computers, as i just said too, to have even seen a video game...!
                              I like reading serious books.

Maybe you might want to try that for a pastime some day soon?
You can start with Memoires de Guerre by Amin W.

[Are you a man or a woman, by the way? Just wondering, as I saw someone said "bibi" the other day. Maybe that was saying something else than a woman's title. Just to clarify who is one of my prime opponents!]
