    To Quote Rumi

Why think thus O men of piety
    I have returned to sobriety
I am neither a Moslem nor a Hindu
I am not Christian, Zoroastrian, nor Jew

I am neither of the West nor the East
Not of the ocean, nor an earthly beast
I am neither a natural wonder
    Nor from the stars yonder

He was never Afghanistan's to steal from us, this is by his own words, and also by his own words, Persians nor Turks could claim him.

But why do you care? You're not even Afghan technically.

Also, as economist Kaushik Basu says: "For a nation to progress it is important for people to spend time on science, mathematics and literature instead of spending time showing that 5,000 years ago their ancestors did science, mathematics and literature."

"He represents our heritage. He belongs to everywhere and nowhere, according to himself, but if he were to belong to anywhere, he would indeed belong to Balkh first, to present day Afghanistan."

"His Masnavi is foremost Afghanistan's heritage"

I am sorry but this contradictory and incorrect appeal is embarrassing to read. He left Balkh when he was a child, which anyway wasnt part of Afghanistan in the 13th century and Rumi wasnt an Afghan who were only Pashtuns at that time.

Masnavi is the heritage of Sufi Dervishes firstly and then poetry in Persian language, it has nothing to do with modern nations and borders. He doesnt "belong" to the modern states of Iran, Turkey or Afghanistan.

^^^ That doesn't even make sense ......Rumi, MAY NOT have even heard of an Afghan, nevermind be from Afghanistan

        He's buried in Turkey
Speaks Farsi .....let them have him.

Also, as economist Kaushik Basu says: "For a nation to progress it is important for people to spend time on science, mathematics and literature instead of spending time showing that 5,000 years ago their ancestors did science, mathematics and literature."

Let them "have him". This isn't something about "oh yeah this history is yours", what this is about is the truth behind Rumi's origin. Just because you speak the language doesn't mean that you come from a country. You wouldn't call an American scientist "British" because he speaks English, do you?

Google search is saying that Rumi was born in Balkh of modern day Afghanistan so he was Persian or Tajik or related..........i will be surprised if some one claim him to be a Pashtun

Imagine if Indians started claiming Sher Shah Suri as "theirs" , and said just because He spoke Pashto, doesn't mean he was Afghan. That's how ridiculous your statement sounds.

Rumi didn't just happen to "speak" the language; it was his Birth tongue, the culture he was raised in. He was pretty much a Persian/Tajik, just like Our Wannabe Pashtun friend is a Mongolian in origin.

"Since there's no evidence he belonged to the Persian ethnicity, thus be belongs to Afghanistan"

This is stupendously moronic logic. ....If there's no evidence he didn't belong to Persians ethnically, that means he belonged to a country we KNOW he didn't belong to?

If his birth tongue was Persian, and he communicated in Persian; it's safe to say he's Persian or Tajik in origin This is the 13th Century; not Modern Day Internet world where a Hamsaya Mongolian whose ancestors were fake Sayyids who worked with the Mughals can be a Wannabe Pashtun.

Balkh at this time was a Persian/Tajik region culturally and ethnically, that's evidence he was more than likely Tajik......Why should Pashtuns claim someone that has absolutely nothing to do with Pashtuns?

                      Here's the picture of the girl who made this petition;

I think it says enough about the merits of these claims.

                      From her "Change" petition:
Petition * Dear UNESCO, Rumi belongs to Afghanistan * Change.org

Other pages of her with photos I cannot even post here.

That's because Sher Shah Suri didn't only speak Pashto, he himself called himself "Pashtun". Your lack of analysis in your own statements are hilarious. According to your logic, let's call Ibn Sina a Saudi Arabian since he did all of his works in Arabic. IMO, he is the shared legacy of the golden ages of Iran, Afghanistan and Turkey.

You do realise that it is based off one of his most famous drawings. He himself wore a turban like that.

Was Ibn Sina's birth tongue Arabic? That's what you should be asking first

If your answer is NO, then your argument holds no merit. Also Sher Shah Suri never once calls himself Pashtun; we just know he's Pashtun from his ancestry. Likewise with ibn Sina and Rumi their lineages are Persian.

This pretty much settles that Rumi was ethnically Persian....

Franklin Lewis: "On the question of Rumi's multilingualism (pages 315–17), we may still say that he spoke and wrote in Persian as a native language, wrote and conversed in Arabic as a learned "foreign" language and could at least get by at the market in Turkish and Greek (although some wildly extravagant claims have been made about his command of Attic Greek, or his native tongue being Turkish") (Lewis 2008:xxi). (Franklin Lewis, "Rumi, "Past and Present, East and West: The Life, Teachings and Poetry of Jalal al-Din Rumi", One World Publication Limited, 2008). Franklin also points out that: ”Living among Turks, Rumi also picked up some colloquial Turkish.”(Franklin Lewis, "Rumi, "Past and Present, East and West: The Life, Teachings and Poetry of Jalal al-Din Rumi", One World Publication Limited, 2008, p. 315). He also mentions Rumi composed thirteen lines in Greek (Franklin Lewis, "Rumi, "Past and Present, East and West: The Life, Teachings and Poetry of Jalal al-Din Rumi", One World Publication Limited, 2008, p. 316). On Rumi's son, Sultan Walad, Franklin mentions: “Sultan Walad elsewhere admits that he has little knowledge of Turkish”(Sultan Walad): Franklin Lewis, "Rumi, "Past and Present, East and West: The Life, Teachings and Poetry of Jalal al-Din Rumi", One World Publication Limited, 2008, p. 239) and “Sultan Valad did not feel confident about his command of Turkish”(Franklin Lewis, Rumi Past and Present, East and West, Oneworld Publications, 2000, p. 240)

Also, as economist Kaushik Basu says: "For a nation to progress it is important for people to spend time on science, mathematics and literature instead of spending time showing that 5,000 years ago their ancestors did science, mathematics and literature."
