I asked my grandmother (my mothers, mother) about her fathers mother (the one that was half Bagrationi and half Ossetian) and she told me that Bagrationi ruled Georgia for centuries and that they were Christians. Also that they believe that come from an ancient Armenian family (don't remember the name) and that the Jewish connection was made up. Much similar to the Ethophian royal family (if you know about their claim of Jewish ancestry). But unfortunately she could not remember the name of the Ossetian tribe.

But I think Ossetians and Armenians are related (both Indo-Europeans) while Georgians were a Caucasian people. But I want to know a bit more of my ancestors ancestry from Caucasus so I think I will try to now more about it.

Could you tell a bit about your ancestry? Armenia is a very old culture so you must have interesting history.
You are right - the Bagrationis appeared in Christian times, first they were known as Bagratunis in Armenia, than a branch of them in georgia georgianized and became Bagrationi, but they were originally not Armenians and not Georgians- many suppose Iranian origins and the name Bagrat derives drom Bagadat(Godgiven) - for example there were commanders in pre-christian times with that name.
However the origin is uncertain, if I am not wrong somebody claimed that Bagratids derive from the Yervandids(a very olde armenian kind dynasty with possibly iranic connections).
About Ethiopia I do not know much- so it is a complete lack of knowledge - the only thing I learned is making Ethiopian bread .
    About me?
I come from simple people that were originally from Karin(Erzerum, nowdays turkey)- they lest their homes and setteled after one of the Russian-Ottoman wars in a region that nowdays is in Georgia and were Armenians live.
Partly I have also roots from Iranian Armenians.
Lng time we used to live in Georgia, Russia, some in Ossetia.
and in Armenia. Lineage of simple people doesn't go so far in the past as all the founders of the family names of my relatives lived at least 200 years ago(not more).
As our history was full of hunger and war - simple people didn't care so much about their ancestry- so my knowledge doesn't go too far. Many got lost with years - so even with all my effords to study my families history I stop at the same 1800 and cannot go more in the past.

Armenians have ancient Anatolian/Western Indo-European associations and they are a different branch than the Indo-Iranians/Persians.

I doubt your grandmother is of Armenian decent and she is more likely a Iranic-Caucasian. The Ossetians are believed to be descendants of the Alans (a Sarmatian tribal confederation, who were displaced from the western steppes by the Huns). However the Ossetians are ethnically mixed at this point and whilst Ossetian women are Iranic. Ossetian men are seemingly native Caucasian types.

Ossetians are a unique group in the Caucasus, in that they are the only ethnic group found on both the north and south slopes of the Caucasus, and moreover they speak an Indo-European language in contrast to their Caucasian-speaking neighbours. We analyzed mtDNA HV1 sequences, Y chromosome binary genetic markers, and Y chromosome short tandem repeat (Y-STR) variability in three North Ossetian groups and compared these data to published data for two additional North Ossetian groups and for South Ossetians. The mtDNA data suggest a common origin for North and South Ossetians, whereas the Y-haplogroup data indicate that North Ossetians are more similar to other North Caucasian groups, and South Ossetians are more similar to other South Caucasian groups, than to each other. Also, with respect to mtDNA, Ossetians are significantly more similar to Iranian groups than to Caucasian groups. We suggest that a common origin of Ossetians from Iran, followed by subsequent male-mediated migrations from their Caucasian neighbours, is the most likely explanation for these results. Thus, genetic studies of such complex and multiple migrations as the Ossetians can provide additional insights into the circumstances surrounding such migrations.

        • Retro...what you mean Azerbaijanis are Iranian? I thought Iranian is a language classification. There was a DNA study in Iran which shows a clear divide between north and south. I will try to find that out.

          • Hello Everyone,

After reading this forum, I am still lost as to where we Pashtuns originated from. DNA is very interesting, my tests came back as R1a1, however I believe we must also consider Anthropology and Archaeology to uncover our very clouded history.

            Salam,

Most Pashtuns are R1a1, due to the Aryan migrations to the region, as Afghanistan was the vital point whereby the Aryans settled to invade India.

              • If anyone on this forum has tested their dna, you can actually give your result to this website (contact), they basically break it down further, its called Harrapa Ancestory project: Harappa Ancestry Project - Genetics and South Asia

^there are many people on this site from all over asia, there is only one pashtun guy though and he is only half pashtun, the other half being english

So btw, is it true that marriage in Pakistan and Afghanistan is arranged? So how can you love someone that you've never actually known or at least talked to?

                        @ punjabi

aryans invaded india , and drove out the indigenous population or enslaved them . the cast system as also the whole hindu religion are based on this aryan influence , however there is very little known about this people , because this event goes probably 5000 years back , however their heritage is kept in the languages of this region .

                        • Aloha

Aloha and greetings, it's amazing that the world has become so small and its literally becoming a melting Pot.

I would like to learn about my Paternal background though, since its amazing. All I know is that my grandfather is Pashtun and my grandmother is Persian/Afghan. Its been a great learning experience reading posts about the region and the Pashtun people, I remember when I was 7 (24 years ago), there were some family members that visited my grandparents from the region, the women were all covered and the men had long beards and they wore turbans. I remember listening to the language, and I couldn't understand a single thing that was spoken. Both my grandparents were speaking it, but to me it sounded strange but beautiful.

I am excited to be a part of this forum, and to learn more about my ancestral background. Who knows, I might meet a distant relative

He is Afridi and was born in Pakistan, he didn't talk much about his past, so that's all I know about him. He had 8 children and I am the only one in my family that's trying to trace down our family, the rest of my family are pretty much involved in their own lives in the US and Canada and don't really care. It literally drives me crazy

                              • Maybe it will have something to do with Bani Israel, I would feel proud if it can be proven genetically that we Pashtuns are the descendants of those prophets of Bani Israel and now we are one of the best muslims in the whole world. We are fighting today to defend the real Islam and we want the establishment of Allah's laws on earth! That is so great!
