North indians on average are a hybrid of west eurasian and ancient south asian dna. So it would make sense if kalash are mostly west eurasian and have very little ancient south asian dna
Whilst silk road, also played a very important role historically in terms of cultural transmission. South, Central and Western Asia are by know means disconnected.

The Kalash and Nuristanis seemingly have ancient Palaeolithic Indic/Central Asian and Neolithic Western Eurasian ancestry. They are very unusual and it's hard to know quite what to make of them. However I'd say that they are some kind of isolate, indigenous Indo-Aryan peoples.

"A genetic study published led by Firasat (2007) on Kalash individuals found high and diverse frequencies of :Haplogroup L3a

    (22.7%), H1* (20.5%), R1a (18.2%), G (18.2%), J2 (9.1%), R* (6.8%), R1* (2.3%), and L* (2.3%). Haplogroup L originates from prehistoric South Asia."

The mtDNA Haplogroup HV peak in your chart is intresting since HV is a West Eurasian (West Asian) haplogroup found throughout the Middle East, Iran, Anatolia and the Caucasus.

Pakistani Pashtuns are seemingly much like Tajiks. Only with maybe with more Southern and less Eastern Eurasian ancestry. Afghani Pashtuns likely much the same with a certain degree of variation due to tribal/regional factors.

Guys, I have found another DNA study about the Greek ancestry of populations from northern Pakistan. In this study, the DNA profiles of three groups i.e., Burusho, Kalash, and Pashtuns have been compared with those of Greek population sample. The study concludes that whereas Kalasha are genetically distinct, Burusho, Pashtuns, and Greeks are closer (limited Greek contribution to Burusho, Pashtun gene pool). The study also points to a common Indo-European gene pool shared by Burusho and Pashtuns that predates Alexander invasion.

The title of the above study is "Investigation of the Greek ancestry of populations from northen Pakistan", 2004, Atika Mansoor et al.

The study can be found at: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/14986106

A later study (Y-chromosomal evidence for a limited Greek contribution to the Pathan population of Pakistan, 2007, Farast et al., http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17047675) affirms the contribution to Pashtuns.

Thanks for that informative comment. The chart has been cropped on the right side, so another peak of an R-type subhaplogroup is missing from the above chart.

Moreover, as I understand it, the mtDNA characteristics are transmitted maternally whereas Y-chromosomal features paternally. Is this right, retro?

The Y or X (in the case of a daugther) chromosome are passed exclusively through the males sperm and the females X chromosome via the egg.

Females have two copies of the large X chromosome. Whilst males have one X and one small Y chromosome. The Y chromosome is basically a junk gene, at this point and the X chromosome is the more important of the two.

X and Y chromosomes as imaged by an electron microscope.

They said it would be impossible to have the diversity we do today if we all had. Evolution is proven fact and cannot understand how any intelligent person can believe in creationism. You can not debate in line "the Qorhan says so" and ignores all the scientific support for evolution. Just as your forefathers were ignoring the earth is round. PLUS if you go by the Adam and Eve story, it's all incest. She had 2 sons. So her sons would have had to have sex with her to keep the population going lol. The whole story is crazy.

This Darius guy is a complete idiot!

The early Muslims said the world was spherical way before Copernicus in Europe said so. He is superimposing a European narrative on Muslim history.

His ignorance is reinforced by the fact that he refers to the Quran as "Qorhan", when there is no "h".

What a stupid and ignorant moron!

I was talking to the friend from DNAforums.com and he said the Russian connection is"entirely on the dominant "type" of R1a1a found in Kandahar, which is ridiculously "inbred" (several haplotypes share a rather recent ancestor by ancient standards)"

^ which means its only a very small part of the sample and is really old, perhaps over 10,000 years ago. So obviously all pashtun dna is not (russian) perhaps only a small part of it, which is understandable because in ancient times the population was very low.

I am still waiting for his full analysis though, it will take another 2-3 days. it will give a more clear picture on pashtun dna

^ i didn't say they are russians, i said small part of their dna, which is nothing surprising.

and just to point out, the paper is not talking about russians sitting in moscow, it is talking about a region where checnya and other muslim areas of southwest russia are.

It shows your lack of education and understanding. Evolution is a theory and not a fact.
In fact today there is more evidence, contrary to the theory of evolution and most scientists dont believe we came from apes any more.

Also it is the scientists of the past who claimed the world was flat not us muslims. we knew 1450 years ago that the world is shaped like an ostrich egg.
round but flat on the top and bottom. also not even very long ago scientists believed that the world was perfectly round, yet the muslims knew 1450 years ago that the world was not perfectly round.

If you believe in the theory of evolution then your obviously not a muslim and yet even today according to the laws of science there is a supreme creator,
a supreme designer. we Already knew all this. science is trying to comprehend at each turn and therefore adapting gradually. so its your fore fathers who thought the world was flat not mine.
Even the two greatest scientists in history i.e. sir Isaac newton and Albert Einstein believed there was a god.

Have you ever heard of the teleological argument?

Have you ever heard of the laws of thermodynamics?

Have you ever heard of the law of cause and effect?

Have you ever heard of entropy

Have you ever heard of enthalpy

You see if you knew the science you so talk about you would know that god exists. do your research before you talk out of your backside again.

Although many Muslims have been partially Arabised. They certainly don't have common origins. The Chechens are closely related to the Ingush and they are nothing like Pashtuns genetically.

The inbreeding/bottlenecking is likely the result of cousin marriages and endogamy.

R1a has Neolithic Western Eurasian, Indo-European associations and Central and South Asians, do seem to have a lot of West Eurasian mtDNA (Western Asia). What is more, R1a's distribution is seemingly dominated by the R1a1a (R-M17 or R-M198) sub-clades both in Europe and Asia.

The problem with imaturish population gentists on forums like dnaforum is that they don't apply a systematic methodical process to the data. Their opinion can be taken seriously only if they can publish their findings in a credible journal like international journal of legal medicine.
