Amir al Ghaznavi, are you similar Kakar to Sahil?
well, Kakar is the name of the tribe, its equivalence would be Ghiljai or Durrani except it doesnt have as many subdivisions within it. it then has sub tribes and clans within it.

Za pa Qowm bandi Kakar yum, pa Kakaro ki za di Musa Khel yum, aw pa Musa Khelo ki zi di Nekzai yum

^ as my daddy taught me

thats wierd. i know alot of people with Kakar as a last name, but not as a second. I heard that Musa Khel fall under Sanzar Khel, but also heard Musa Khel is the equivalent of Sanzar Khel, so Im not sure whats going on.

I was curious of one thing that Pashtuns in Afghanistan usually dont use name of their tribe, or khel etc as their last name. Even the last name Khan is also found very less among Pashtuns in Afghanistan. Instead they use Persian or Arabic words or pen names (takhalus) like tahzeeb, zeerak, Arsalan, etc

While Pashtuns in Pakistan usually use their tribes as part of their names like Khattak, Yousafzai, Wazir, Kakar, Masood etc.

Is it my misconception or its a phenomenon and any explnation for this?

alot of pashtuns do use their tribal names. but the reason its less in afghanistan is because, i believe it was Daud Khan, who forbid the use of tribal names as a last name. this was either in the 50s when he was PM or the 70s when he was President.

so alot of pakhtun families took an ancestor or patriarchs name as a last name, and in the persian tradition, added the "i" to it

for example, my friend Ali is a Popalzai but his family took the name of his great grandfather Ibrahim and thus their last name is Ibrahimi.

you may also find some Pakhtuns use the persian equivalent to Zai, which i find ridicolous. for example, Popalzad or Popalyar

Thanks Amir for the explanation as I did not know daud had forbidden using tribal names. And yes this Ibrahimi and popalyar or zad is also common.

Still I cant understand why Khan is not used that much frequently ?????

it is...but you see...in afghanistan pashtuns are khans and we dont need to emphasize it whereas in pakistan many pashtuns refer to themselves as khans to maintain that identity...in many cases they are no longer culturally or linguistially pakhtun so they use khan as an identity marker

This is excuse for persianification of names of pashtuns in Afghanistan. Khan and tribe name was used by our ancestors and we are still using it nowadays.
Most of pashtuns of pakhtunkhwa has three names. First name, middle name which is khan and last name which is tribe's name. Forexample khushal khan khattak, shahid khan afridi, amanullah khan jadoon.
Only yousafazis in pakistan dont use their tribal name that much as tribal system in their areas has greatly weakened due to large population and spread.

the fact remains that in Afghanistan, people are Khans, they dont have insecurities to where they have to put the Khan name in their name 3 -4 times to emphasize their pakhtuness
