Why are we even emphasizing khan? It is a turkic title given to some pashtuns for serving their armies...is there really a point to this?

by this same logic, a Pakhtun named Toryalay is better than me , because I have an Arabic Islamicized nameOriginally posted by Luffy View Post@amir al ghaznavi
Kakars of balochistan are better than you, they use surname of kakar.
I am proud of kakars of balochistan, they have retain originality.
Listen wrora, Im 6"7, and I live in a city of immigrants. Everyone from Persians to Desis know Im a Pakhtun when they see me. Its written in my face, head to toe I dont need to state my tribe as my last name
frankly I wouldve 100 times prefered my Clan name (Nekzai) or Tribal Name (Kakar) as my last name, but my father took on his fathers name as our last name 25 years ago. What do you want me to do?

If it makes you feel better, I have a last name that means nothing at all lolOriginally posted by Amir al Ghaznavi View Postby this same logic, a Pakhtun named Toryalay is better than me , because I have an Arabic Islamicized name

thats the exact situation im inOriginally posted by Laila View PostI am actually getting my last named changed to my sub clan's name. I just have to fill out the paper work. Right now my last name is my late grandfathers first name. Out of respect to him, i am keeping my current last name as my middle name.
i want to honour my grandfather and i do so by having his first name as my last name
but i really want a pakhtun last name, and nothing says pakhtun like NEKZAI
but the paperwork would be atrocious

Actually, the paperwork is not that bad. The only thing is for me, i have to drive to city for the court date. I was told it wont take long. And if you are serious about doing it, its worth it. You see, I live far from the city, so i have to take a day off from college and work to go get it down.
But i doubt it will be that bad, go ahead and do it
I am still keeping my grandfathers name, it will be my middle name.

I noticed most Wardaks have Wardak as their surname.
I don't. My surname is a slightly changed form of my grand father's name.
I would never change it.
In English my name should be Haris but when we came here my dad wrote it phonetically on the passport.Originally posted by Master Khan View PostMY dad wrote my name completely wrong on paper
!!..its sound so silly.
I really wanna change it but to much paper now.
And then in School, bank or other official documents my name is spelt differently again to how it is on my passport lol
It's caused alot of confusion for the government hah
I was thinking of changing it to Haris but then decided not to since it shows people i'm different. I don't want to change something i've grown up with just to fit in with this society.
It's like a Muslim apostate in the West changing his name from Ali Abdul Hussein Ibn Al Muttalab to Larry Johnson.....It just doesn't work lol---
To advise others is an easy matter, the difficulty is accepting advice -- since it is bitter for those who follow their
own inclinations and desires.

many afghan-pashtun use parsi takhalus like masoodi, qasimi, nasiri, yaseeni etc.
It is iranian influence.
ahmadi is ahmadzai, yaseeni is yaseenzai etc.
khan is not a turkic word.
Pashtun are using khan long before the turkic arrival to pashtunland.
sadullah khan the ancester of sadozai was born long before that.
khushal khan
ahmad khan abdali
mir wais khan
and many more used khan is their surname.
all my family members have ,,khan,,and most pashtuns in pashtunkhwa use it as surname. In afghanistan too many still use it.
Most people in our area add tribe name like shah mamad khan jadoon/gadoon etc.Last edited by gadoonwal; 08-03-2011, 05:29 PM.

my name on birth document is my first name and tribe name - mohmand. however document proceeds with farzand (son of) my father's name that doesn't include mohmand. however my plar's papers have his name and my grandfather's name that includes mohmand.
the problem happens when i was studying in europe. they wanted to know my vorname (first name), familiename (family name).
i know someone whose whole name is shahsawar. when he returned from europe with his european passport, his first name became shah and family name sawar!!!!

Alot of people who have their name end in -Ullah, have their last name as Ullah and their first name as the first part.
Like
Shafiullah is Shafi Ullah
Etc..
My name is after my dads dads name, which I really do not like. But, in Afghanistan no one really has a last name.

Does this normally happen now? I always thought that usually your last name is your tribal clan. Is your last name like this? or do you have your tribal name? or you just have another name that has nothing to do with this? or am i just crazy?
My grandfather just had one name but he used to be called "Sahak" because of his clan.
Here in America we have your average run of the mill "Muslim" family name; nothing to do with my Grandfather's name but more his profession, since my grandfather was a Qadi
