Pashtun Last Names

I have noticed more and more that Pashtuns have taken their fathers or great grandfather's first name as their last name.

Does this normally happen now? I always thought that usually your last name is your tribal clan. Is your last name like this? or do you have your tribal name? or you just have another name that has nothing to do with this? or am i just crazy?

My grandma had a theory that if more than two siblings have the same surname they will die early and to demonstrate she names 4 of my uncles with same surname, two died early. so we in our family have a surnames from nowhere and anywhere.

Mine isn't..although for one of my uncles it is. Like we just use our father's name as our surname, but for one of my uncles he uses our tribal name Yousafzai (Esepzye).

What i am trying to get at is who carries their tribal name...and who doesnt? and if you dont, is it your fathers respected name? Our tribal name, especially for Pashtuns, is part of our identity.

From the way I understand it. In afghansitan most afghans go by one name. When asked where they ere from, they usually say the towns name and their tribal affilition, they would say their subclan affiliation and so and so on until they say I am the grandson of so and so or the son of so and so. Most people adopt the tribe or subclan name as their last name, but last names are a foriegn idea to afghans.

The women usually keep their surnames, they do not adopt their husbands name but the children would all be identified with the husbands tribe and their loyalty would usually be with the husbands tribe.

My last name is my tribe/village name. I feel connected to my last name and i kept it even after marriage. it is still the same in the system as it was the day i was born...

my last name is a huge part of my identity. i couldn't even think about changing it after marriage.

i dont have either my clan (Nekzai), sub tribe (Musakhel)_ or tribe (Kakar) as a last name

i have part of my grandfathers name as my last name

however for a long time i have been seriously considering changing my last name to Nekzai, my clan name. but too much paper work

my full name is : sahil kakar ahmad sanzar ( sanzarkhel is 1 of the subtribe of kakar tribe so my family use sanzar for short nt that my name is short lol )
