    Ijaz,

you are mistaken. I feel that if other ethnic groups adopt our ways, our pashtunwali, then they are automatically pashtun. It is our way of life that we have held onto for so long. Blood means nothing. When my grandfather left Afghanistan for good, and went back to visit. His relatives told him that "you can have tea with us, but blood means nothing to us." Do you understand? For those Pashtuns who have left, we are no longer considered part of their tribe. this was unfair. My grandfather just could not stand fighting for the rest of his life. He left with a very heavy heart. This has resulted in a longing I have acquired to one day return to Afghanistan. According to his relatives, our tribal affiliations with them meant nothing anymore. Yes, very harsh indeen, but thats the way it is. As far as Im concerned, every ethnic group in afghanistan can join us, but that means they have to forget their heritage, and become a Pashtun completely. they need to stop speaking their language, and adopt our ways 100 percent. this would be the pashtunization of Afghanistan.

I agree completely. But the question is, would they forget their heritage and become a Pakhtun completely? Will they not be waiting in a shadow, having knives up theirsleeves?
I even don't demand for forgetting their heritage for assimilation but to look on the Pakhtuns as elder brothers, sincerely and not harbouring animosoty towards them.

We Pashtuns (from all tribes) were originally from the 10 lost tribes of Israel (the Jewish tribes that had to flee Israel due to persecution). My grandfather relayed this story to my father. My grandfathers father relayed this story to him, and so on and so on. I think you get the point.

There is another story that has been relayed to my father through his forefathers. Two brothers, Amrid and Afrid left Afghanistan a LONG time ago, and sailed the world. Amrid discovered America, and Afrid discovered Africa. Hence, the names given to the two continents (Amrika and Afrika). You will not find stuff about this on the internet, but Im sure your fathers have told you this. If not, then I assume their forefathers were embarrassed to mention that we are the original Jews. This is something to be very proud of because now I can say THAT I DID not evolve from APES for certain lol.

One thing is certain, we do not originate from Iran (meaning we are not Aryans). Research is being done on the 10 lost tribes theory, and so far there is a lot of evidence supporting it. Yousafzai means sons of Yousaf. afridi, sons of ephraim.

          check this out
Pashtun clue to lost tribes of Israel | World news | The Observer

We have a legitimate claim to palestine. if we become more aware of this, this changes a lot of things israelis, they wont like this !!!

lulz we can't claim our own lands now days let alone claim Palestine.

The Jewish theory is debunked many times. It might turn out to be true for certain tribes or people that the Pukhtoon assimilated but to claim that Pukhtoons descended from Jews or Bani-Israel as whole is not supported by any tangible evidence. Original Pukhtoons were the Paktha, or Paktyans who lived in Paktiya (the region divided between Paktia, Paktika, and Pekhawar valley).

The word Pukhtoon, Pashtun, Pashtin, is Arabic in origin. The use of noon comes from Arabic grammer. Kafirun, Kafirin, Alimun, Alimin, Muslimun, Muslimin.

The clue for original designation is in our own Pukhto language.

What is the plural for Pukhtoon in Pukhto? Pakhta-nah. PAKHTA'NAH.

PAKTHA - NAH = Pakthas - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Original Pukhtoons were Indo-Aryans. But today they are a mix of various groups that settled in the region. While the Indo-Aryan genetic makeup might be the largest group amongst the Pukhtoons, they today might not make the majority. A DNA test showed that amongst a tested group of Pukhtoons only 40% had the Indo-Aryan genes while 60% belonged to various other groups.

Pukhtoon is an ethnicity and not a race. Arab is an ethnicity, so is Punjabi. Jews are followers of the religion of Judaism, not a race. Jews trace linage from their mother not the father. This is why today majority of the Jews look more like their European fathers than their semitic mothers.

The human race is divided into three main branches, Negroid, Caucasoid, and Mongoloid. Pukhtoons are predominantly Caucasoids with some rare Mongoloid admixture.

Thanks. I can probably show using my DNA that I have "low" or "limited" genes that connect me to Ethiopians. If anything, this just proves that some Greeks were assimilated into Pukhtoons, while the claim that Pukhtoons are descendants of Greeks and Europeans is just false.

Dear wrayun, you're tottaly wrong. As we all know the letter "P" does not exist in the arabic alphabet. In their books and histrocal documents they called us al-afghania. As for the suffix "tun", it's a pure Pashtu/pakhto word. it means "Place" like phohantun, ketabtun, nandartun, darmaltun and roghtun.

Of course it's not an entirely Arabic word. It's origins are in Arabic in sense that Arabic script started the initial writing system for Pukhto. Bayazid Ansari is believed to be the first to write down Pukhto. Where did he learn Arabic from? Where does the origins of Pukhto current script come from? When you answer these then you'll understand what I meant.

The words that you listed with "tun" are recent addition to Pukhto vocabulary. And as far as I know "Pukhtun" is not a place. Some Pukhtoons still refer to others as Arabyun, Punjabyun, this is Arabic script influence. In Pukhto we add an "ay" or "ah" or "na" sound to people or places. Arabay, Punjabay, Afridai, Yousfzai, Pekhawarai, Kandaharai, Qabalai.

This study is subject to many things, like when and which place it was done. Though I personally believe it represents an accurate estimation for overall genetic makeup of Pukhtoons.

My dear friend, I think you missed the point. As I said above, "tun" is a pure pakhto suffix. Here is an interesting article about the suffix "tun".
The suffix tun goes back to the Sanskrit root sthana(Stan).

The words that you listed with "tun" are recent addition to Pukhto vocabulary. And as far as I know "Pukhtun" is not a place.

According to the Y-chorosome Research of sadaf Firasat, 44,8 % belong to haplogroup R1a. 4,2 % to haplogroup R1b, 2,1 E1b1b and 11,5 % to haplogroup G. As we know, R1a and R1b are a subclades of R. According to Firasat et al. R has been found in 1.0% (1/96) of a sample of Pashtuns.

                          44,8 % + 4,2 % + 1 % = 50 % haplogroup R

                          • Emal_khan,

As far as I know R1b is not related to Indo-Aryans/Indo-Iranians rather with Western Europeans or to some degree with Indo-Europeans. R1a is specifically associated with Indo-Aryans and Iranian peoples. Even if we include all of that it still comes out to 50%. Not quite a minority but neither a majority. These results speak volumes of the diversity of Pukhtoon genome.

As for the article about stan/tun, I disagree. I don't know any examples in Pukhto where "tun" is used for places other then the recently added words to Pukhto dictionary and vocabulary in the past few decades. Stan itself could be argued that it is not purely Pukhto. We use khwa or zay. This is why some don't like the use of Pukhtoonistan, instead they prefer Pukhtoonkhwa. It still doesn't explain why Pukhtoons will refer to themselves as "Pukh-tun" (suffix for place). On the other hand Pukhtoonah/Pukhtanah makes more sense.

                            • Zahir,

-There is still a lot of evidence pointing towards this though. Did you read the article I posted? Also, how would these stories be relayed to my forefathers? In other words, why would someoen make this up?
Much of that evidence can be very easily explained. Much of Jewish practices are also part of the Islamic faith. Many Jewish names and customs are part of the Islamic faith, to which majority of the Pukhtoons belong. There were great numbers of Jews that were settled in that part of the region who could have been completed assimilated as time went by, and some of their customs became part of the Pukhtoon heritage. So I didn't rule out the possibility of some Pukhtoons being decesedants of Bani-Israelis. When your forefathers told you these stories, they were telling their part of the truth, not the whole truth. This is why the origins of Pukhtoons differ from area to area.

-I don't think that we are Indo-Aryans because there are no similarities between our languages and the Indo-Aryan languages (farsi, hindi, punjabi). Also, we do not look Persian. Our features are very distinct.
Pukhto has alot incommon with these languages then Hebrew. Pukhto itself is a mix of various indepedant languages that were once spoken by various isolated tribes that are now known as Pukhtoons as a whole. That is why you have so many unique dialects and different words to explain similar things. As for looks, Pukhtoons come in all shape and sizes. So do Persians and Punjabis.

-These race divisions were made by some German anthropologist in the 1800's. I don't think that one can except this as truth.
