  • Why don't Waziris cut their hair?

Any cultural/historical reason? Or is that just a thing in Waziristan?

They claim descent from samson, the great jewish warrior who did not cut his hair, as he believed it would make him weak.

btw mehsuds also keep long hair, and so do I my hair touches my shoulders almost.

Do you have any sources for the descent from Samson theory?

No historical reason. They just don't. Not all of them have long hairs. The trend picked a pace due to talibanisation, as in islam you either you have long hair or bald head.

Really? I've read that there was some historical reason. I find that it's more common within the Waziris than for example Yousafzais or Khattaks in KPK.

Has anyone noticed that the older attan videos like from the 70s were much better?

The style of attan was different with a lot more head movement and it was a lot more in sync with the drummers. I saw an interview on YouTube where one Wazir was saying that he thinks people nowadays don't know how to do attan properly anymore and this is being forgotten due to all the wars and conflicts.

Can anyone notice a difference or am I being stupid?

I agree with you. In older videos people are more in sync with the drummers and each other. They are in genuine trance state. Today many people care more about being filmed doing something than letting go and experiencing the moment for themselves.

I wouldn't say they were in a trance state but rather they were a lot more in control of their movements, like head, hair and body and they would move in accordance to the drum beat with proper timing and without looking stupid like nowadays attan dancers. In a well executed attain, its the drummer that is controlling the dancers and that is what you see in the older ones. I think the trance like state is Sufi dancers where they seem drunk.

The only fellow I have seen nowadays that can do it properly is a chap called Ghamai... but even his attain becomes a little stupid when he starts pulling out new strange moves.

This is such a unique and exclusive dance if done properly, that it should be preserved in the same way the Maoris haka is preserved, carried out and displayed to the whole world.

I hate Arran because if the head movements. As a matter of fact, for as long as I can remember and amongst Pashtuns, men with long have been considered shady on the masculinity terms.

Yeah, I thought it was the other way around. The TTP's leaders were Maseed/Mehsud hence they kept long hair.

I have long hair as well (almost reaches my shoulders).
