  • Red Orange beards?

So at least twice now on Al Jazeera I've seen older men in Pakistan who dyed their beards bright red - orange, what is the cultural significance of this?

    From IslamWeb:

Dyeing the hair with Henna is a confirmed Sunnah of the Prophet ; he did it, said it and confirmed it. 'Uthamaan Ibn Mawhib said:
    Quote:
"I entered to the house of Um Salamah, so she showed me some hair of the Prophet dyed with Henna and Katam (a kind of dark Henna)." [Ahmad and Ibn Maajah]
    Furthermore, the Prophet said:
"The best thing with which you dye your grey hair is Henna and Katam." [An-Nasaa'ee]
    Moreover, Ibn 'Abbaas narrated:
"A man who dyed his hair with Henna passed by the Prophet . Upon seeing him, the Prophet said: "This man did really well." [Abu Daawood]
Besides, Imaam Muslim reported that Abu Bakr and 'Umar dyed their hair with Henna. Therefore, there is no way in doubting over the permissibility of dyeing the hair with Henna or doubting whether or not this is a Sunnah. The fact that Henna does not grow in the desert and believing that the Prophet was unlikely to obtain it, does not affect the religious ruling. Even if we suppose that Henna does not grow in the desert, it is still possible to obtain it through the caravans which travel to Ancient Syria and other countries. It is well-known that the Arabs in general and the tribe of Quraysh in particular used to travel to Ancient Syria and Yemen in winter and summer times. In short, the Prophet obtained and used Henna whether it grew in the desert or obtained it through the tradesmen.

    Also:

It was reported that Abu Hurayrah said: the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “The Jews and the Christians do not dye their hair, so be different from them.” (Narrated by al-Bukhaari, 3275; Muslim, 2103).

It was reported that Abu Umaamah (may Allaah be pleased him) said: “O Ansaar, dye your hair red and yellow, and be different from the A’aajim (Persians).” (Narrated by Ahmad, 21780. The isnaad of this hadeeth was classed as hasan by al-Haafiz Ibn Hajar in al-Fath, 10/354).

Dying gray hair pitch black is impermissible probably because it is a form of deception about one's true age. With henna, it's more obvious that dye has been used.

It's commendable for Muslim men to dye their hair and beard reddish brown or lighter shades of red/orange with henna.

It's common all over Western Asia, Central Asia, South Asia, Southeast Asia, Africa and parts of Europe..

But dying the hair or beard black is seen wrong.

^Yemenis also do it. Generally, the few traditional cultures that have not been influenced much by the West still uphold many sunnahs. Most other Muslims don't use kohl either, something which is also sunnah of Nabi Muhammad SAW yet Pashtun men normally use it. Also, other Muslims rarely cover their hair or keep beards while Pashtun men almost always do. As I said, it's about how much infiltration from foreign cultures or lack thereof there is in the society.

Its not normal to use kohl for Pashtun menl, I know there are a lot of pictures most of whom are talibs were you see them using kohl, but ordinary Pashtun men don't use it, in Afghanistan I saw no man who used kohl on there eyes.

^Lol, I remember being at Qatar airport and met by all these straight-from-the-mountain type Pashtuns and a lot of them were wearing kohl. I've also seen it in pictures.

you can go to any indian or pakistani store to buy them. I would not buy the ones that have chemical color in it, that is not the real thing plus you could have an allergic reaction to it. Buy the natural stuff which is healthy and a little pricier.
