  • Pashtun traditions?

    Hello all,
I was just wondering if there are different traditions carried out among the various Pashtun tribes and if they have any specific ones in common?
Could Pashtuns fill me in with some of the various traditions that are Pashtun-only?
For example, the attan is specific to the region/tribal area.
Are there any special Pashtun festivities?

No, I'm just a curious, wandering soul who wishes to learn more about the Pashtun culture.

There are bears in the area I am from, but no one hunts them, unless they attack villages, but they are mostly in the mountains.

But hunting rabbits, birds, gazelles was common before. Most of the wild life has been elliminated during the soviet and US invasion.

I find the attans of Quetta to be very similar to the Balochi chaap.
Quetta Urak ATTAN - YouTube --Urak Attan???
Brahvi Chaap By Na Shad.(2).mpg - YouTube--Brahui Balochi chaap

Can anyone tell me which regions use clapping in their attan? It's really interesting the Pashtuns of Balochistan have a similar dance to the Baluch.

Nas. Many like nas. The tins with glass and mirror are nice, the green texture is nice, but the method of jettison is disgusting and filthy.

                    What does nas mean?

                        Nope. Dont get it Dagarwal

Mystique, Nas is naswar. Its tobacco laced with lime and and sometimes other potent ingredients. It is pinched or rolled into a ball and placed between gum and cheek. then you wait for the rush.
It is carried in an ornate tin, decorated with a mirror ( to keep the pashtun looking immaculately cool) and sometimes the tin is embedded with coloured stones that make the tin look beautiful.

When the nico effect wears off, the nas is ejected, unfortunately by many on a wall, the floor of a room, public office, bus, etc.
i saw clint eastwood's character eject his nas on a dog's head! (Film: The Outlaw Josey Wales).

Its effect is similar to dokha (tobacco smoked in a midwakh pipe in the Gulf) rush.

Nass: tobacco, ash, cotton or sesame oil,[4] water, and sometimes gum.[5]
Naswar, niswar: tobacco, slaked lime, indigo, cardamom, oil, menthol, water.
