    intermarriage?
There are people today who think that admitting God’s absolute greatness decreases the value and importance of humans in the creation, as if God and mankind are rivals competing in greatness and power. Meanwhile I feel that whenever our perception of God’s greatness increases, with it we become greater, because we are the creation of a great God.

A name is just a name. 'Shayesta' is also a popular name amongst non-Pashtuns. It does not matter.
Even Adobe Photoshop can't change me.

A line[Durrand line] of hatred that raised a wall between the two brothers -Hamid Karzai

For generations, the Hindus of India prayed for deliverance from "the venom of the cobra, the teeth of the tiger and the vengeance of the Afghan."

The men of Kábul and Khilj also went home; and whenever they were questioned about the Musulmáns of the Kohistán (the mountains), and how matters stood there, they said, "Don't call it Kohistán, but Afghánistán; for there is nothing there but Afgháns and disturbances." Thus it is clear that for this reason the people of the country call their home in their own language Afghánistán, and themselves Afgháns. The people of India call them Patán; but the reason for this is not known. But it occurs to me, that when, under the rule of Muhammadan sovereigns, Musulmáns first came to the city of Patná, and dwelt there, the people of India (for that reason) called them Patáns—but God knows!

      -Ferishta, 1560–1620

Marriage does not transfer the mans last name to the woman like it does in the west.
There are many farsiwans with Pashto names. But the reason was to get government jobs because during the 80's and before pashtuns dominated Afghanistan so they had to pretend they were pashtun or do a little brown nosing. I have seen farsiwan in the US adopting American names for the same reason to be accepted.

back in the days everyone could speak pashto and dari in afghanistan so if someone heard of a beautiful name, they would name their child that.
there is no need for making everything political.

I am no bird, and no nest ensnares me.

What are you talking about. Most of the kings family could not speak Pashto. There are more bilingual people today than there were back in the days. Kissing up to the pashtun elites back than was normal and a fact not political.

the king's family couldn't speak it but people still found it necessary to suck up to the pashtuns? i am talking about 30 years ago. you are not doing anyone any favors by making pashtuns seem like a bunch of arrogant patronizing jerks.

the royals are more farsiwans then farsiwans itself.
The pure tajiks or farsiwans are proud people.you can,nt compare them with those half breed people claim to be of pashtun origin and can,nt speak a word of pashtu.
zahir shah and other royals got nothing in common with pashtu speaking pashtuns .
They werer used by farsiwans against pashtun gilzais to keep pashtu speaking out of power in afghanistan. They played this game for the last 250 years.

The pure tajik or farsiwan would never use pashtun tribal name.
They are proud people with their strong cultural infuluence in afghanistan.
ok here we go.The farsiwans with last name of pashtun tribes are mostly duranis and other pashtun tribes. They lost their language and culture cus of their close relation with tajiks and kizilbash.Intermarriage of the tow community also destroy the pashtu language and the result is there that now their own pashtun identify them with farisiwans.
It is pashtuns mostly have this farsi last name like sherzad, meharzad, changing ahmadzai to ahmadi, yousufzai to yousufi ,raheemi etc .
All of the above if few farsiwans even have pashtu name so whats wrong with that?

You are wrong. I personally know farsiwans with pashto names and they proudly call themselves tajiks. They are not pashtun who persianized. They just choose pashto names to try to fit in with the pashtun elites just like people from all over the world come to America and adopt american names. Thats why you have asians with amreican names, latinos with american names, even arabs and persian people with american names. Its a strategy to fit in with the people, to be accepted by the people that have the power in the society.
I asked a farsiwan why he gave his son an American name vs a farsi name, he replied that in school he would be sidelined if teachers know he is foriegn or not of the same ethnicity. He said human beings are naturally prejidice so you must adapt to succeed.

You dont know what your talking about. Zahir Shaw's administration had many programs to promote pashto but none of them worked. They tried to completely pashtunize the government by restricting communication in government administration only in Pashto which also failed. Today you have Englich as the lingua franca on the world wide net, if I give you a mission to replace English with Chinese(a much more difficult language) as the lingua franca on the world wide net, its almost an impossible task. Thats why the afghan government failed on every level to promote pashto.

Farsi as a language was much more richer in literature and poetry hence the reason Farsi as a language has had huge influence not just in Afghanistan but also in the Indian subcontinent as a whole, not to mention Turkic central Asia. The whole Moghul empire was influenced by Farsi, the Durrani empire was influenced by Farsi, even the English could not completely challenge Farsi's richness in the subcontinent. Today English is in par with Persianized Urdu and Persianized Hindi in the subcontinent.

The only time Farsiwan as a people had any profound influence in Afghanistan was during the civil war 92-96 and post 9/11. So what your telling me was that Abdur Rahman was used by Farsiwan to aid the Ghilzi to invade Farsiwan land in the Shomali plains. Your hatred for the Royals is blinding you from the truth.

Some of you people are confused. There is a difference between Farsi as a language and Farsiwan as a people. For example the Uzbeks and the Tajiks speak Farsi and are Farsiwan but that does not mean their is complete love for one another. Just because the Royals spoke Farsi does not mean they are not Pashtun. Many Farsiwan in Kabul would claim to be decendents from tribes in Kandahar just so they can be in favor with the Pashtun elites. Language does not change ones ethnicity.
Its like muslims in America change their name from Mohammad to Mo to fit in.

Its not about doing favors, its about revealing the truth. The ones in power are usually a bunch of patronizing jerks no matter who they are whether pashtun or farsiwan.

so you mean to say that the royals didn't care enough for pashtu to learn it or speak it amongst themselves but they were stupid enough to be flattered by the gesture when some tajik or hazara tried to bull**** them by giving their children pashtun names??
last i checked, in order to hold a job one needed skills required for that position which is exactly what was taken into consideration before an employer hired an employee. jobs were not given away after the employee skimmed through the application to search for the most pashtunish name on the file. names are given on the bases of inspiration and uniqueness even amongst communities that are not necessarily highly educated, not the intention of hopes for better job opportunities once the child grows up. this prejudice and hatred towards different ethnicity in afghanistan has been injected to the minds of afghans recently. it didn't exist amongst afghans a while ago. you make yourself seem like an ass and pashtuns as a race of domineering arrogant pigs while the rest of the participants in this thread nod their heads like a bunch of mindless grass chewing cows and you think you have yourself a discussion. you pathetic jerk.

its true that many non pashtuns took pashtun names for government jobs in the past. a sad state of affairs. not only because of the blatant discrimination but because guys like zahir shah didn't even speak pashto.

there were unwritten rules for government positions and the military. pashtuns would get high ranking positions like the rank of general, as did tajiks but not as easily. tajiks were mostly regulated to government positions that required smarts. hazaras/uzbeks were not allowed to be promoted beyond a certain rank in the military unless they had some major pull which more likely than not, they didnt have. large numbers of pashtun tribes were not required to join the military, even though the army back in zahir shah times was based on a draft.
