The prior rulers of Afghanistan like Amir Abdur Rahman, had a policy of forcefully migrated rebellious tribes to the North to break down their power base in the South, hence you have a lot of Pashtuns up North.

Most Pashtuns in Northern provinces migrated there during Abdul Rahman Khans era, he moved rebellious tribes as Scimitar mentioned to fertile lands in the North. Western Afghanistan, however, if Im not mistaken, has historically been an Abdali stronghold?

I do remember reading somewhere that Kandahar region was historically a Ghilzai stronghold and the west (Herat region) an Abdali stronghold but when Nader Shah invaded Kandahar he expelled the Ghilzai and moved the Abdali there instead, Im not quite sure of the veracity of that tough.

It probably depends on the place, Pashtuns where surrounded by Farsiwan are more likely to adopt Farsi I think. I know a Pashtun family from Mazar (well the mother is Farsiwan) and they speak Farsi amongst themselves. In Kunduz the Pashtun population is concentrated so they dont get absorbed by Farsiwan.

Likewise in Kandahar there is a significant Tajik minority but since they are surrounded by Pashtuns theyve been absorbed by Pashtuns linguistically atleast and dont speak Farsi anymore.

Ghilzais moved from Qandahar to Zabul, Ghazni, Wardak and so on.

my family originated from Qandahar but we now inhabit Ghazni and Zabul

i think the majority language (eg English in UK. SA, Australia and North America) and culture has such a powerful influence on people that it dominates. Farsi spoken by jawan in shamal afghanistan is no exception.

Hard to blame the youngster, as they grow up, their reason/passion/awakening for learning Pashto take time to develop, and during that time they have become better in Farsi. Later on this person realises he is being called beghairat.

The parents have to speak pashto at home strictly and expect children reply in pashto, for Pashtun expats.

thats such a shame its because pashtuns dont do enough for their language. these tadjiks want that all pashtuns speak only farsi
