  • Define a Pakhtana...

In light of recent thread that i was reading, "values of true pakhtana"... i decided to make this new thread...

simply because i didn't really find any post that truely had any definition of pakhtana, it seemed like such a waste of a thread..

I think we all should have a chance to put forward our own sense of what a true pashtana be like, and how she should behave...

I think it will be interesting to read everyone's views =)

    go on...!

      thank you for your response.

can you elaborate on "angelic"... is she supposed to be like an angel? we are talking about Humans here. wouldn't you agree that expecting a human to act like an angel is too much to ask for, any human, a man or a woman.

the other ones are pretty good ones ..

A line[Durrand line] of hatred that raised a wall between the two brothers -Hamid Karzai

For generations, the Hindus of India prayed for deliverance from "the venom of the cobra, the teeth of the tiger and the vengeance of the Afghan."

The men of Kábul and Khilj also went home; and whenever they were questioned about the Musulmáns of the Kohistán (the mountains), and how matters stood there, they said, "Don't call it Kohistán, but Afghánistán; for there is nothing there but Afgháns and disturbances." Thus it is clear that for this reason the people of the country call their home in their own language Afghánistán, and themselves Afgháns. The people of India call them Patán; but the reason for this is not known. But it occurs to me, that when, under the rule of Muhammadan sovereigns, Musulmáns first came to the city of Patná, and dwelt there, the people of India (for that reason) called them Patáns—but God knows!

I don't agree as beauty is not in the hand of a person himself/herself, therefore, this is a secondry quality.................Pukhtunwali is like this in the words of Hamza Baba:

PA PUKHTUN WAALI BA HAMZA CHAREY O NA KHOREY TINDAK
PA PATO STARGO PI TIREGA DA KAALA LAREY DI

Admin Khan, you should have left some room for us too.

I would include the qualities listed by Admin Khan, but above all, what many people lack, is a strong, yet positive attitude. Many people will encounter difficulty in life, but the means through which they try to relieve themselves of these burdens is not a legitimate one. Along side strength, she should be humble in her approach, which comes from modesty, which is a product of adhering to one's faith. She should be intelligent, aware of her rights and responsibilities and use them to an advantage that includes those people she calls her own. She should be simple, not a simpleton, not sadaa, but simple; simple and straight in her hayaa and dealings with people outside of her comfort zone.

If I include anything else, it may seem fantasised.

                        Born to a Pashtun father.

Pashtuns are an ethnic group, not a behavioral species in which someone can sit there and make little lists with bullet points, all of which have to be followed in order for a certain individual to fit into their categorization of Pashtana.

A Pashtun and a Pashtana by definition are individuals born to a Pashtun father. Not individuals that fit into your "definition" of what they should look, act, smell, talk, breathe, walk and behave like.

They might very well be non-Muslim, disobedient, disrespectful and be going against the all Pashtun values. However, despite popular belief, they do not have a Pashtun card you can revoke once they have x number of Pashtun felonies in your book lol

Stop picking and choosing. It's an ethnicity not a behavioral group or secret society in which you can admit people and dismiss people as soon as your definitions change.

Mayanacke, we assumed (those who posted), given we are already on a Pashtun platform, that we pick out the behavioural aspects, as lineage, in this case, is already defined. We are not disregarding differences, but, collectively defining them to bring out the similarities within this ethnic group you make mention of. Sure, they don't have to be followed, maybe, like anything else, this is an idealised approach? I doubt anyone will disagree with your post, however, in this thread, it may seem slightly out of place.

I believe that behavioral aspects are relative.. and in terms of the wording: Behavior does not define a Pashtun - lineage does, as bitter and cold as that may sound. We can discuss ideal behavior, although even an idealized approach may seem Utopic to some because "ideal" is relative as well. And I even agree with most of the favorable behavioral aspects (not just for Pashtuns but for human beings) mentioned but those behavioral aspects, like you pointed out, don't have to be followed. Ethnicity does not depend on behavior. And I have run into people who believe that it does and if you don't do x, y, & z, you're not Pashtun and your Pashtun license has been revoked. And that's what I have a problem with. While it may be obvious to some, it's major truth-breaking to others lol

As I said, there are few who would disagree with your first post, however, as I see it, this thread is aimed at defining the differences in behavioural aspects of what it means to be a Pakhtana, by lineage that is (though this isn't the point of concern), and what characteristics, relative to the traditional ethnic definitions, lie out of this fold. Lineage doesn't stand on its own, and like you would put it, comes with it measurable characteristics that may or may not apply to other ethnic groups and so, while you say ethinicity doesn't depend on behaviour, behaviour does depend on ethnicity. Sure, the behavioural aspects listed in this thread can be applied to any group of people, and for those who have listed them, doesn't necessarily accentuate a boastful stance. But, from what I see it, most posts reflect existing behavioural aspects of someone the posters know, or something they hope to witness in our women. And mind you, though it may seem as such, this is not the standard. I guess the difference in opinion resulted from the latter.
