The insect which is always attracted by the light , lamp, candle etc at night is what we called a patang......Urdu daan warta "Parwana" wayee....In pashto poetry usually this patang is vastly used not the butterfly....Originally posted by Feroza_Banu View PostPatang is commonly used in Afghanistan and it is used vastly in Pashto Poetry.

پتنګ د بلې شمعې يار دے
بلبل د ګلو خريدار دے
د لېلا دوه سترګې مجنون پېژني
د ازادۍ قيمت پښتون پېژني
In the first line Patang's love for Shama(candle) is described .....and we all know butterfly is the lover of flowers not light.

In pakhtunkhwa it is "ass" with a shorter "a" sound.....don't know how pashtuns of afghanistan pronounce it.....We only use "Alif mud" for words that have come out of urdu like "Aayenda" meaning "next time" or "Aab o hawa"(climate) infact in pakhtunkhwa we have no word that starts with a longer sound of "a" i.e Aaa.Originally posted by Feroza_Banu View PostKhair wosay
The Alif mad should not be ommitted at all because Pashto didn't come out of Urdu but rather Urdu is influenced by pashto, arabic, Farsi/Dari... we shouldn't be changing our way of writing because Urdu is borrowing it from us...
There are many many words that use "alif mud"... and when pashtoons pronounce that word they actually pronounce it as "AAA"
the word "aas" (horse) is pronounced exactly with "alif mad" with a longer "a" sound.
