  • Pakhto idioms

An idiom is an expression, word or phrase whose sense means something different from what the words literally imply. If a speaker uses an idiom in his conversation the listener might mistake its actual meaning, if he/she has not heard this figure of speech before. Idioms usually do not translate well. In some cases when an idiom is translated to another language either its meaning is changed or it is meaningless.

Like other languages Pakhto also has a good number of idioms that we use in our daily conversations....
In PF many threads have been initiated for the learners of pakhto language....this one is directed to provide info about pakhto idioms....

Members are requested to participate and post pakhto idioms with their english meanings..and use them in pakhto sentences

Here are some from my side (starting with Alif):

    1. Oba' da warkha teredal-----اوبۀ د ورخه تېرېدل---To miss the suitable time for doing something....
Sentence:Oss oba' da wakha terey dee, da jara na sa' na' joregeee,,Nokia ta' fail shawey ye
    2. Oba' kharawal-----اوبۀ خړول-----To make pretexts for doing something wrong..
Sentence: Da Nokia za' PF ke na' yam khwash, noo hasey oba' rata kharawee chey ta' Farsiwan ye......
    3. Asman sara khabarey kawal----اسمان سره خبرې کول----To fly high/fast
Sentence: Angaar Bicycle la domra speed warko chey pa 2 minuta ke bicycle asman
    sara khabarey shuro krey.
    4. Akhwa Dekhwa kawal-----اخوا دېخوا کول-----to avoid working on something
Sentence: Angaara za' darbandey poha yam chey ta' intelligent ye, hasey akhwa dekhwa ma' kawa, sam topic jor ka....
    5. Asman pa sar akhistal---اسمان په سر اخستل-----To panic/a sudden feeling of anxiety and fear especially among many people
Sentence: Sta na qalam sa wrak sho chey asman dey pa sar akhistey dey..

I think it is enough for today....Ka' meaning leekalo ke rana da angraizey ghalti shaweeee wee noo da haghey dapara bakhana ghwaram...correct me if i am wrong....

    Manana,
    Yousafzai

My father is writing a Pashto book related to this. I will try to see if I can steal some of his work.

A line[Durrand line] of hatred that raised a wall between the two brothers -Hamid Karzai

For generations, the Hindus of India prayed for deliverance from "the venom of the cobra, the teeth of the tiger and the vengeance of the Afghan."

The men of Kábul and Khilj also went home; and whenever they were questioned about the Musulmáns of the Kohistán (the mountains), and how matters stood there, they said, "Don't call it Kohistán, but Afghánistán; for there is nothing there but Afgháns and disturbances." Thus it is clear that for this reason the people of the country call their home in their own language Afghánistán, and themselves Afgháns. The people of India call them Patán; but the reason for this is not known. But it occurs to me, that when, under the rule of Muhammadan sovereigns, Musulmáns first came to the city of Patná, and dwelt there, the people of India (for that reason) called them Patáns—but God knows!

What do you call an idiom in pashto?

Im curious as to what they call it in pashto....
I asked someone and they said istilah and lahja..
I wasnt satisfied with both answers since istilah is an arab word and lehja means accent...so if you guys have
another word in mind please post it..
