can somone tell me the correct pukhto words for the following

window = ? we use kirkay but kirky is also used in other languages

lawyer = ? we say wakil but i know thats not pukhto

country = ? we say malk but that sounds like mulk and therefore maybe borrowed.

army = ? we say pauj but that sounds like fauj

difference = ? we say parakh but that sounds like faraq

near = ? nizdey but that sounds like nizdeek

scraf = ? we say sazar but that sounds like chador

cloth = ? tukay but others say toki

thought/think = ? we say sowch but i know thats not pukhto

wall = ? we say dewal but that sounds like dewar

sky = ? we say asmaan but so do other south asian languages

sea = ? we say deryaab but that sounds derya

time = ? we say wakh but that sounds like waqt

power = ? we say takat, quwat, but so do others

strength = ? we say zor but so do others

clever/intelligent =? we say ukhyar some say ushyar but so do others

school =? we say skool but thats english

subjects =? mazmuna but thats like mazmoon

school - I say maktab but in official pakhto I think its meant to be showonzay or something
university - I say pantoon but in official pakhto I think it is pohantoon.



That's not official pakhto, that's how I say those words.
The rest I either forgot, don't know or pronounce the same as you.

Words such as farq (difference), soch/fikr/tasawur (thought), etc have roots in either Arabic or Persian and are hence found in various languages spoken by Muslims worldwide. The problem is that during the Islamization of the Afghans (8th-12th centuries onwards), many Arabic words were absorbed by our ancestors just as the Turks, Persians and other peoples did during that era. As a result, some very basic words of Pashto were completely replaced by Arabic words and hence lost forever especially since we don't have any written records from the pre-Islamic era.

The governments of Mustafa Kemal Attaturk and Raza Shah Pehlvi I set up commissions to remove all the foreign words from their languages. The Turks were successful in doing so to a great extent. Even in post-colonial India, Nehru set up government bodies that replaced Persian and Arabic words in Hindi with their Sanskrit equivalents.

i would like to thank all of you for your input but i really appreciate Nokia_Apridey's reply since most of the words that i know are incorrect in my list have been replaced by him. so thanks for that.

sea = seen?? seen is a river, khuwarr is a stream. i wonder what the correct word for sea is? if sea = seen. Then what do we call a river?

also the word zarokay is for clothes not a piece of cloth.

There are too many problems with our language. for instance 4000 words are added to the English dictionary every single year. as things are invented and as words are needed accordingly they are added to the dictionary. our poor language has to suffer because of lack of commitment and lack of financial backing. its such a shame and as a result we have been borrowing from other languages.

scientist = pohanmal,or pohaan,sciensdan is parsi,again we dont have word for scientist ,we may just call them scientist
bridge = pull ,dont know if we could say that is farsi or they got it from us.


Afghanresistance yes we do have arabic and parsi words in our laguage ,most of it is because we didnt had those words in our language.
