Hallo has a great point about accents and dialects. It would be hard to standardize with Roman phonetics.

It seems incredibly useless when the current Pashto script is universal and can be understood clearly without dialectical re-examination.

In reality, according to linguists, Roman script is inferior to Arabic script. Arabic script is more fluid and have less symbols that change the sound according to where the dot(s) is/are placed. There are less rules, its very simple.

Roman script on the other hand has too many rules, ones needs a whole encyclopedia to know the rules. Most people that use Roman script make spelling errors frequently.

I think that the whole Europe should do away with Roman alphabet and adopt the Arabic alphabet. Students would have more time learning more important things like science and math then spending time learning useless rules about spelling.

Europe did away with Roman numerals because they too were inferior to the Indian/Arabic numerals.

Pashto kho ezda da zaka chi hase khabari kawalai shum. Ka poh pray na sho no jawab krrai na shum.....

see what you wrote makes perfect sense in Nakhsh script. The romanized stuff is almost indeciphherable.

Nakhsh is perfectly structured for Pashto. This conversation is proof.

Romanization sucks in every language. Its sloppy which is why even professors make spelling mistakes.

People like Happy khan and badlun lack the capacity to think progressively. People like them have kept the Middle Eastern people backwards.

Its not that his Romanization sucks, its that romanization sucks period.

Arabic script sucks because here you have to write the whole words not letters.
If it is so good, why 99% of users of this site write in Roman script(both English and Pashto) not in Arabic script. Why today's advanced knowledge is available in roman script not in Arabic script. Just type Pashto in Arabic script , you will feel how frustrating it is!

99% Pashtusna re text messaging in Roman script. Only books are published in Arabic script but very soon it will be replaced by Roman script because it is the need of the time. Arabic script has made Pashto a less developed and difficult language.

Genius thoughts! This is what I like to read. Allie would be proud to know that a modern day sensai like you is going to work a miracle and turn an illiterate in Arabic script person burning trash for food into a literate in Roman Alphabet script person with your touch. Sure, the obstacles are fierce like nearly every road sign in southern Afghanistan that I encountered, but at least I can stop studying the Arabic script I need to do my agricultural work in Kunar. After all, if people are text message in Roman alphabets then surely NEVER text in Arabic script. It must be the forces of darkness opposing the two dad messiah (aka you, Badlun) by trying to create smoke screens like Arabic texting/keyboard options on the iphone. Maybe that was the reason it was hard for you to realize your dual tribal paternity nature... perhaps in Afghanistan the birth certificates show the fathers name in Arabic script and you had to go back and read it slowly to read: Shinwari and Safi.

Here is the real reason why badlun and happy khan wants roman script.

from Khostia's source:

Atatürk knew these secular reforms would be futile if the Turkish people could manage to rally together to oppose them. The biggest danger to this new order was the history of the Turks, which since the 900s had been intertwined with Islam. In order to distance the new generations of Turks from their past, Atatürk had to make the past unreadable to them.

Atatürk introducing the new Latin script in 1928.
Atatürk introducing the new Latin script in 1928.

With the excuse of increasing literacy among Turks (which was indeed very low in the 1920s), Atatürk advocated the replacement of Arabic letters with Latin letters. Much like Persian, Turkish was written in Arabic letters for hundreds of years after the conversion of the Turks to Islam in the 900s. Because Turkish was written in the Arabic script, Turks could read the Qur’an, and other Islamic texts with relative ease, connecting them to an Islamic identity – which Atatürk saw as a threat.
Basically to erase peoples history. So what is the difference between you guys and the Salafists who destroy ancient historical artifacts and monuments that you criticize.

Happy Khan

What you posted; while interesting and informative; has no bearing over the merits of Romanization.

1.)

The problem with Romanization is that the phonetic variants are too diverse to be used practically by languages which use a suppressed voweling system in their scripts. To be mutually intelligible the suppressed voweling allows different readers to intonate a word according to their voweling patterns without sacrificing a standard writing system which can be understood by all.

Just because Roman and Arabic (Nakhsh) script may have all originated from Phoenician is completely irrelevant because clearly Roman script is an inferior development to the Arabic script. It is just a historical fact that Modern Phonetic Based writing first started from The Middle East and spread elsewhere. It tells us nothing about quality or efficiency.

Only languages that currently use Roman Script should stay in Roman Script. And only because it's already in such locomotion. as Khushal said even in THEIR own languages Roman Script is terrible. And it is

Roman script is so inefficient and cumbersome.

2.) You're right that we don't know what your or Badlun's intentions are; but both you and Badlun have made his/your views known and most of his/your Views are in conflict with the mainstream Normative Values of Muslim societies; Badlun has also made it known that he has an overt Political Agenda to alter the social and political landscape of Muslim societies into one that Resembles Western Liberalism (as have you). Both you and Badlun advocate Western Liberalist attitudes on things deemed immoral according to Normative values in Muslim societies. It is based on this evidence that both you & Badlun appear to be Advocating Blind imitation of Western Liberalism, rather than Sifting out the corrosive aspects (loose or dysfunctional forms of sexuality, loss of family values etc.) from beneficial or useful aspects (scientific, technological and economic development) which in actually do not depend on each other to exist i.e. we can have scientific, economic and technological development without the cultural baggage of Western Liberalism. This pattern forms a portrait that you & Badlun are working to advance Cultural Imperialism and Hegemony of Western Liberalism

As Khushal pointed out , we have a historical case study from Turkey that demonstrated that the push to move to a Roman Script was also tied with political and social agenda to remold Turkey around a Western Liberalist ideals.

Therefore it is only reasonable to affiliate Romanization of language as a strategy associated with promoting Western Liberalism.

And thereby it is fair to resist and expose Romanization as a tool to erode the Normative Values of Pashtun regions.

3) Quran's Arabic is Classical Arabic [with different grammar and vocabulary from Modern Arabic]; so to understand it a normal Arabic programme will not be enough they would need to go for a special programme to say Al-Azhar university in Egypt or Qom in Iran or may be Zaytuna College in USA

This is actually incorrect; Modern Standard Arabic is simply a slightly simplified version of FusHa, the classcal Arabic. The only difference is that certain formal rules have been left out for easier elocution. What you're talking about is the various "luhaj" or dialects that different cultures speak among themselves Everyone in the Middle East speaks Modern Standard Arabic.

Furthermore we have Arabic scholars among Pashtuns; that learned and teach the Arabic language curriculum just as it is done in FusHa

I didn't say Classical Arabic is a dialect of Arabic. But even if I did it's irrelevant The differences you're referring to is between he Luhaj, Modern Standard Arabic is FusHa just with slightly less formality. The Modern Luhaj are just regional dialects which are not Modern Standard Arabic

Mullas are one thing; Scholars of Arabic are another; I don't see why a language scholar would be a problem, all they do is teach a language. I think our children are better around an Arabic scholar than some creepy Hindkowan who has some juvenile fixation for translating "Cunnilingus" into Pashto.

We can use the Latin Alphabet for Already Latinized Languages; just not for Pashto or Arabic. It would be foolish. In fact it would detriment their education more since it creates more confusion to use Latin than Nakhsh script. It has nothing to do with what I like; if Latin Alphabet is inferior .....what can I do about that? The biggest proxy wars were created by Countries which uses the Latin Alphabet. so if you're truly against Pashtun children dying in proxy wars it makes sense not to use the Latin alphabet.
