            Pakhto Dars

I hope that you're all well.

I've been busy with other things, so without much fanfare, here's Pashto Dars No 8.

            One request.

This time (only) PM me your responses, rather than posting to the board. When the first contributor posts to the board, it kind of automatically stops others from posting (I think). It's difficult to then gauge overall response/interest and what people know/don't know.

I will wait for a few messages in my Inbox before I share responses here. I hope that this is ok. Anything to encourage participation and give me an excuse to hand out stickers!!!

Of course, please continue to use this space, to ask questions about the text, to ask for help and so on. The questions you have may be the questions that others have too.

I commend posters on their interest, their support and their willingness to guide. I never did say I was in the Master Class and there are people who are far better than me. In many ways, I learn as I go along and so for me, this has been a valuable experience. I hope it has been for everyone here too.

Today's edited text, plus links to the audio file and translation.

            1. What is the first question that is asked?
            2. What name is metioned in the text?
            4. Find the word that means 'in front of'
            5. Is the house near or far? Explain your response.

Abu Baker - Pa Roman Pukhto kee walika -

I know what you mean about keyboarding, but, the more that I do it, the easier it becomes .... you've followed the tips on how to do this, right?

PM me your responses anyway ...

Dear AbuBaker, I waited on your responses but perhaps because this thread got buried under a pile of of a whole load of others, it got missed.

Anyway, I want to make a big PashtunForums "thanks" to Din , Chino and AfghanPrincess , all of whom PMed me with their brilliant responses to the last Pashto Dars.

                  Responses, feedback and discussion below.

The questions based on the text (scroll back) were:
                  1. What is the first question that is asked?
                  2. What name is metioned in the text?
                  3. Define لوي سړک and کلي
                  4. Find the word that means 'in front of'
                  5. Is the house near or far? Explain your response.
                  6. How do we know which direction the house is in? __________________

                  {Din}

                  the first question asked is
                  .2satar khan
                  3.kali means village
                  and lui sarak means throughfare
                  4.makhamak
5.Its near because he can see the ground from where he is standing and he doesnt have to go beyond it.
6.we know the direction because he explained the landmarks (mountain)

                  {Chino}

                  You from this land?
                  Satar kan?
                  land road
no its not far cause he said its close
cause he said it in the script
                  Forward Message

                  {AfghanPrincess}

                  Are you from this village?
                  Sattar Khan
                  village big road
                  dar makha yes its far
cause he told us to go straight and then makh a makh larshey

                  Feedback from تور خان

                  1. ✔✔✔ You responded according to your understanding of the question, I think. My translation might look a little like: Salaam u Alaikum Brother. Are you from this village?
                  2. ✔✔✔ Perfect. Sattar Khan.
                  3. ✔✔✔ لوي سړک and کلي slightly different translations, but correct in understanding - main road/village - the slight variations make sense
                  4. ✔ Din got this one - the word for "in front of" would be مخامخ
✔ Afghan Princess used the expression "Dar Makha" which doesn't appear in text, but would be a good translation
                  5. ✔✔✔ - The responses varied, but it was a matter of interpretation and this is why I asked for the expanded response. Let's look at the text:
په لوي سړک چه لس دقيقې لاړشي هلته به په ښي لاس کې يوه لويه ونه ووينې
Pa loy sarak chi las daqeea lar shai alta ba pa kha laas kee yowa loya wana wainai ...
On the main road if you go 10 minutes on the right you will see a tall tree ....

                  If
a ten minute walk along a single stretch of long road is how you read it, then the house may be far; if you read it as the house being ten minutes away then perhaps not.

My main idea was to extract the word دقيقې daqeeqa for minutes - many of us still use "minute" or ("millat") in our Pashto.
                  6. Again, there were various interpretations. Trees, mountains are roads got a mention, but I was actually looking for the direction words ښي لاس/مخامخ- khe laas/makhamakh (the right hand, in front of), but overall responses made good sense, so well done.

I appreciate the time that you took to respond to this and would like to share my thanks again.

Well done folks. Let's do all that we can to keep our spoken and written language alive and relevant.

I'm NOT a fan of long posts, and I suspect this one is going to turn out to be one. Apologies in advance.

Politics and Pashtoons go hand in glove, but then so do poets and Pashtoons and the love of the language.

And then there's history. The inspiration for today's lesson comes from somebody who combines all of this. And thank you to PF member, Din for posting this originally in the History section. I'm not able to acknowledge the source of Din's text, suffice to say, that I only present a version of it.

I've selected, primed and edited the first part of the text that Din posted about Dr Kabir Stori. For those additionally interested, I have my own dedication to this brilliant man here.

Please be aware of one thing. The text that Din posted, was, for me, not an easy read. My Pashto is hardly that of scholars. In anycase, I felt I had to change some of this to fit a little with my Yusufzai dialect (though nowadays you could quite safely add Logari to that since I spend alot of my free time with a Pashto-only Logari friend of mine).

Take the spelling for the word Doctor - I have seen it either ډاكټر، ډاكتر orداكتر
I could really do with help with words like that and with كښې/كې and welcome any knowledgable* opinion on this - *also spelt (spelled) knowledgeable (with the e)

                        {Perhaps I shouldn't complain about Pashto spelling when in last sentence I've already share two examples of English inconsistencies }

That's the easy part - there are words that I don't use and words that appear interchangably in my experience (nwase نوسى / mase لمسى) for grandson for example. I chose nwase** since its closer to how I say it. **There's also nmase نمسی

I had 4 participants last time and as we draw closer to Dars number 10, I feel ready to hang up my mortar board and gown and pass this on. It takes some time on my part to think through the texts and I wish, I wish, I really wish I could add that little extra into this to encourage whole forum participation, because this is our language and we deserve full ownership of it. The trouble with an internet forum is that it's not a classroom and so it isn't the ideal medium in which to explore lots of different learning styles. I recognise that. Perhaps there are some amongst you who can think of another way. For my part, ډیره ډیره مننه because the overall support has been great.

                        Anyway here's the text:

                        Questions below:

                        1. What (a) year was Kabir Stori born in and what (b) was the name of the village in which he was born?
                        2. Why was Kabir Stori's grandfather popular?
                        3. (a) What clan/tribe does the family belong to? (b) From where did they originate?
                        4. Define:

                        5. Name two other relatives of Kabir Stori and their relationship to him.

Oh, and like last time - can you PM me.
