  • The infinitive (mazdar) for the veb "To be" in Pashto?

Wondering if anyone knew what the infinitive or "mazdar" for the verb "To be" might be in Pukhto?

I have seen some consider it to be "Ossedil" while in other places as unknown.

I don't know if Ossedil is correct because it can be conjuaged on its own, for example, as "Ze dil te ossagum" and for "To be" you can also conjugate as "Ze dil te yum."

Any light shed on the issue is appreciated.

In the Pashto classes thread initiated by me there is a detailed discussion on this theme however I will summarize below the main points

To be is the most protean or slippery verb and is both principal verb( to have existence, placement, life etc) and as an auxiliary or helping verb(in forms like am(yam), is(dey, da), are(di, ye, yoo, yast), was(wum, wey, woo), were(wai, woo), being, been).

For example I am a Pashtun( za pashtun yam) here To be is principal verb while I have come(za raghaley yam), here yam is helping verb.

This is very interesting that infinitive translation of To be in Pashto does not exist or is archaic now. As a principal verb osedal(to live or to exist) can be said to be the infinitive translation of to be . As a helping verb may be some archaic form like shtal, or its compound form shta kaidal may be used but all these are not the exact translations of the infinitive To be

WTH! I thought you were a blonde, Jewish German girl with huge spectacles and braces who happen to have chosen studying something related to Anthropology in the uni and therefore love to learn about Afghan culture and Pashto language. Now, I think I had been totally wrong all these years. You are probably not even a girl. Damn! All those fantasies of mine I had about you on my lonely days will be haunting me for the rest of my life.

From what I understand کیدل (Kay-dil) and سول (Swul) are infinitives for "to become" although Kay-dil only is used in a few tenses whereas Swol is a little more complete.

"To be" would be different from the above I believe.

Thank you though for the post and to everyone else as well.

Shwal is not infitive but past reflexive tense of kedal. For exqmple .. they got finished... haghwe khatam shwal.

Infinitive for "to be" is "kedal" for example: it can be ... daase kedalay shi.
How can he be wrong ? Hangha sanga ghalat kedalay shi ? He has to be good. Hagha la kha kedal pakaar di

kedaley is for CAN and shi for TO BE

SHWAL has two forms one infinitive and the other past as you said above.
Kaidal is for TO become or can
The only infinitive for TO BE can be osedal(as principal verb) and shwal as auxiliary verb. In your example da sanga kaidaley shi, SHI is a form of shwal.
