thePashto.com is dynamic Pashto-English & English-Pashto dictionery having more then 15K words along with complete grammatical descriptions. The dictionary is designed for both advance and beginner users to make it suitable for all. The auto suggestion feature allows any beginner to select the required word in English/Pashto to find the meanings.

We enabled GET method in the form/URL to ensure the popularity of the words through social networks as well as an expert user can search the meanings with URL also. You can put any word just after the language in the browser URL as given in the picture below. Put any word in green box. Like Rude in this example & press enter.



Fully supported TTF fonts are installed in the website so that user can easily differentiate between words and meanings as this is the most important feature required for any UNICODE based font. You don’t need to install any additional Pashto fonts in your system. We suggest using google chrome as browser as some features are compatible with chrome only like switching the languages while searching.

Adding new words will be added after sometime as we are checking the feedback of the users and the dictionary is still in beta version. So after that one can submit words to the dictionary and will be reviewed before publish.

It is a good try but already exist such a project. Check out qamosona.com and http://ps.wiktionary.org . I think you should have used your time and energy on something that hasn't been done before in Pashto. Qamosona is the biggest online Pashto dictionary. That is a multilingual dictionary and already has over 50 dictionaries. Also another collaboratively built wiki-dictionary called wiktionary is the wikimedia project that has lots of enteries and meaning. But since it depends on users' collaborative efforts, thus it is not that much well developed.

I think those who wanna do something for pashto language then they should start adding glossary lists, translation memos in Google so that one day we also can have google translate in Pashto. If other people are interested to develop pashto on internet there are plenty of undone projects that should be considered to work for.

One more thing to add: in pashto we dont write لطون for لټون which means search.

As far as effort concerned, i spent only 1 week to develop the dictionary, and now adding the feature for visitors to add new words or discuss the old one's.

You can search any latin based word without installing the Pashto keyboard in qamosona.com. You will get the results either in Pashto, English or any other language that has its dictionary in qamosona database. If you wanna a Pashto word then you have to have Pashto keyboard installed in your computer. and installing a pashto keyboard is not a big deal. You can google it or search in youtube there are several places that instructs you how to install pashto keyboard. There are also website that have virtual keyboards like in Google where you even dont have to install the keyboard. simply use the virtual keyboard and copy and paste the word in qamosona and you'll find your result.

I dont understand what is run-time switching but i assume that if you type a pashto word it will not only give you the meaning of the word but also suggest you other words that are related to the given Pashto word. and this works perfect both in wiki and in qamosona.com

I dont know how is it possible to search for something without knowing it. I didnt get your point quite well. If you are Pashtun you definitely know what alphabet Pashto uses and which word starts with which character. so then whats the problem of not knowing something in this case?

One week is a lot of time spent on something that already exists. But if you use your knowledge and skill to work in some other projects then it will not be a waste of time and energy. I suggest that you try to contribute in the localization of Wordpress. Wordpress is an internationally recognized website that provides blogging service. It is localized in Urdu, Farsi but it is not localized in Pashto so if you use your energy and skills on something that has not yet been done then it would not be a waste of your time and energy. I also suggest you to translate the open source software that are of common use.

Switching means Pashto-English & English to Pashto, you can switch the language on front-end or if you need translation inside searching terms simply click on the word it will translate.
