  • ~ Book Recommendations!

    Salamoona,

here you can recommend nice books that you've read or ask for opinions on books you want to buy.

I'll start off with a request:
Can anyone recommend any good books on the Palestinian/Israeli conflict from a historical/factual point of view, please?

    Kind Regards,
    Mayana

    Mayana,

Lemon Tree is a good book with a historical perspective from both sides. However, it is fiction.

Noam Chomsky - Middle East Illusions: Including Peace in the Middle East? Reflections on Justice and Nationhood

This is the most authoritative and authentic book you'll find on the subject. He doesn't take sides. tor ta tor wayee ao spin ta spin.

If you want a book that will purely talk about the history of the subject (again, as objectively as possible), I'd advise that you go through the "Israel" chapter of this equally authoritative text-book:

George Lenczowsk - The Middle-East in World Affairs.
"If a nation expects to be ignorant and free, in a state of civilization, it expects what never was and never will be".

"Knowledge will forever govern ignorance; and a people who mean to be their own governors must arm themselves with the power which knowledge gives".

The Communist Manifesto speaks of many principles which are Islamic. The major difference is that they break all associations with God.

SO that is also the reason why such an ideal system has never been established properly. Read it. You will see islamic points of equality being addressed. My opinion is people like it because there is no Islam with it.

Malgariya, you either haven't read the Manifesto or you haven't understood it. There is nothing 'Islamic' in the Manifesto. Equality and Justice is not Islamic.

Nadir Shah- please elaborate more on your theory of how "equality" and "justice" are not Islamic.
"Do not lose hope in adversity and complain that God singled you out for punishment, remitting others guilty of worse sins. Your present state could very well be His intent to elevate your spiritual station. Or He could just be testing your faith. Everyday that you persevere, you grow closer to perfection. Thus, your present despair may be the beginning of an infinite blessing". - Shaykh Abdul Qadir Jilani.

                            I recently read these books

                            Imagining Argentina
                            -Lawrence Thornton
This book is about la guerra sucia "the dirty war" in Argentina.
Carlos Rueda, a playwright, musician, and director of a children’s theater in Buenos Aires, discovers, following the kidnapping of his wife by the government’s secret police, that he can “imagine” those who have disappeared, seeing their fates clearly in his mind’s eye
This way for the Gas Ladies and Gentlemen - Tadeusz Borowski
a collection of short stories by which were inspired by the author's concentration camp experience.. The short stories are linked by the themes as well as the presence of the main character Tadek, who serves the role of the narrator as well as the central character. To a large degree the short stories are autobiographical. Tadek is a condensed version of Tadeusz and there is a high likelihood that Borowski was writing from experience. But the two "characters" themselves are different. Tadek is a survivalist with a hard shell. Borowski, described by others, was a leader and a man who nobly helped others and did not only worry about himself.

                              Both!

If you want something creative and deep then i suggest you read Imagining Argentina

If you want something right to the point, real, and deep then i suggest you read This way for the gas

They are both books about genocide so both of them are pretty sad, deep and thoughtful and the writing styles are amazing & they really get you thinking about what it was like through the two wars.
