"Na de kay gayaa kaigi, na kaigi pakay guloona"
"De zmkay sa milawedo la kuzaygi Aasmanuna"
From Kushanas to whitehuns, from Alexander to Mongols, from Timurids to Mughals, from Durranis to Sikhs and from Turks to British, Khyber has seen burnt of invasions over invasions.
The dream of Emperors, the land of Kingdoms, yet history witnesses, all of them vanished from the face of earth, and Khyber is still thriving at its best!
The historic route, the land of Kings, the battlefield of world's finest Generals and Warriors, the steel knuckle stuck between Central Asia and subcontinent. The land of pure, the land of mysteries, the land of abhorrent folklores. The home of ferocious tribes, the motherland of Pakhtuns. The reason of life, the reason to rush Pakhtun blood. May I then take the pride to say "That is where we belong".
The city is majestic in its very form, every stone of it has history. The valley surrounded by closely grouped hills, upon which the historic events took place of the known world. The valley, which was the dream of emperors, the pride of inhabitants and the love of folklores, is what we call home.
The moment you cross the Attock bridge towards the Peshawar Valley, you'd feel home (even if you do not live in Peshawar). The feeling of consanguinity to the lands is so brobdingnagian, that your heart will alleviate in exultance.
When I was a young boy traveling between Islamabad and Peshawar, I use to start count down when the Bus would hit the bridge, 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2 - and the moment Bus would cross the Sign Board that states "Pakhair Raghlay", my heart would leap and scream the nullah of joys that "I am home". I am safe. I am among my people. No matter what, they would protect me from all exigence.
The valley runs in the veins of Pashtuns along the blood, before it throttles in the heart, where it leaves the feeling of fondness and moves on towards the rest of the body to give the message of love, amity, adoration and delight of mystic wonders of culture, exotic food, and unmatched hospitality.
The food is simply amazing. There are no words to describe the taste. The brilliant Afghan cuisines to hot Peshawari recipies to extravagant Pashtuns Tikka Art, is beyond imagination of the term “best taste”, as it’s unique to the land and will never be found anywhere else in the world.
One can easily find continental foods in Peshawar. From Persian to Chinese and Italian to American, everything is available there. Tho we still lack a lot of “hip” joints but whatever is available here, is good enough to leave a unique taste in the visitors mouth.
For shopping, you can find anything in the world in the humongous markets of Peshawar spread over miles and miles of plazas. Since it’s a frontier town, connecting Central Asia and Europe with Indo-Pak and China by road, and one of the 4 crossings that connects the West with East, you get everything you want in the massive outlets on the outskirts of Peshawar City
For Tourism, we offer lots of historic places, thousands of years old architecture leaves one stunned. There is a museum that speaks for itself if you are a history lover. Then there’s an Airport runway, only one in the world, that has a train track going through it. Not to forget the same Train is the only train in the world that is being pulled and pushed by an engine to climb the amorous mountains of Khyber.
A tour in the old city would brings joys of ancient times and a stroll in Khyber Pass will alight the imperial memories.
Not to miss the walled university is in Peshawar, called Peshawar University, most probably the largest ever institution in the world within walled premises.
It has several colleges, Medical University, Engineering University, Agriculture University, and about 60+ departments offering specializations in almost every subjects ranging from Law, Arts, Science and Social Sciences, within a walled premises.
It’s so massive, if you want to take a non stop walking tour of the university, it will take you a couple of days to see everything. And everything is within the same walled premises, giving it a unique introspection. A walk on Road #2 of the University, in the evening, under the shadow of thousands of mathematically lined trees on both sides of the road, is a walk in the clouds.
Anybody else would certainly expect others to speak great of Paris or New York type of cities, because in their mind, beauty is all about infrastructure, lit sky scrappers and facilities. Tho mind that, they are not any less prettier or vibrant, but they hold different significance altogether than something as old as 2000 years (Peshawar) with all the world’s empires and their histories attached to it, even tho Peshawar has no infrastructure like Paris or any other famous metropolis, but such things are materialistic, and can be built even in the deserts, but the natural attraction and the very taste of the city comes integrated with the land and its people and that is what Peshawar offers, along with it's tantalizing culture, exotic food, unmatched hospitality and the feeling of being home.
You don't see Peshawar, you feel it. The City of Flowers, Fershabur, the love of my life.
