its unfortunate that people try to speak for these people even though they are dead, despite glossing over the tidbits of their lives which confirm their islamic faith.

people do the same thing with rumi.

it just pains a non religious person to know that who they respect for whatever reason was a firm believer in the quran and the sunnah.

i bring up rumi because he is a great example of people he would want nothing to do with in his life that worship the guy these days. i met an afghan the other day telling me about all the great things about sufism but said she was non religious as if it were a badge of honor. then she went on about her trips to turkey where she said she felt insulted because she couldn't bring her glass of wine near the masjid lol

it took the will power of the green lantern not to punch her in the face.
There are people today who think that admitting God’s absolute greatness decreases the value and importance of humans in the creation, as if God and mankind are rivals competing in greatness and power. Meanwhile I feel that whenever our perception of God’s greatness increases, with it we become greater, because we are the creation of a great God.

they are from many lands and backgrounds but came under the umberalla of the golden age of islam.

i don't agree with all the ideas but i admire that people were so into the exploration of what reality and relgion are all about.

I dont think toramana would be happy at this post. please delete it, he's grinding his teeth, specially that its coming from a non-muslim

i doubt that. the muslims appreciated/appreciate knowledge and wisdom from the west and east and vice versa.

Sure but the reasons for it was very complex. He was Anti-Democratic and promoted the idea of Absolute Rulers by a Group of Philosopher Kings. While the Trial he was accused of Blasphemy and "Corrupting the Youth"; most see his death was a political assassination.

Now, you can say that is intolerance but was it the same variety of intolerance as the Vatican had towards science and progress?

If you are talking about the past and the west, I think you mean Europe as the Europeans had not ventured yet to America during the Islamic golden age. Muslim scientists were discovering new scientific discoveries and bringing those discoveries through moores to Europe when they were in the dark ages.

no, i am not talking about where the europeans had or had not ventured.

during the golden age of islam, muslims also incorporated knowledge from europeans which is now classified as the west. the west now creates, ideas, scientific creations, computers etc, which are now appreciated by the east.
ibn sina studied the works of aristotle at a young age and as far as i recall he also translated works of greek philosophers into arabic.

Yup which the Europeans all stole from the Muslims.

so aristotle stole his ideas from the muslims?
galen, hippocrites all stole their ideas from the muslims?
                      you have proof of that?

or do you mean, everything designed, created and discovered today, is stolen from muslims?
try being a little more precise.

You could say the same thing about the vatican. Wasnt Galileo and others like him silenced because he and others threatened the vaticans political power. He basically challenged their entire beleif system. He had evidence against what the vatican claimed was the word of God. Silencing him was the same as silencing Socrates.

You could also say the same thing about the prophet Mohammad(pbuh). Werent the meccans trying to silence him as well because he was a threat to their political and economic power.

I doubt the athenians were threatened about socrates Anti democratic approach because he was not a military man nor possessed any power that could overthrow the poliical system of the time. The charge of "corrupting the youth" was valid since he spoke against the greek beleif system and called it a bunch of non sense and superstition. He tried to promote reason vs blind faith and it was this that made the athenians feel threatened by him.
