Have any of you gone for Study abroad? maybe for one whole semester (Fall, Spring) or just for the summer.

What was your experience like? What did you like and didnt like? Was it hard to adjust?

I am planning on going to Italy, Spain, or Turkey for a semester. Havent chosen the country yet, since they all three sound appealing to me.

I have already convinced my parents, and my mom is encouraging me to go.

    So what shall i expect from a student view...particularly a Pashun/Afghan view.

Oh and yes, my courses will be in English so i dont have to worry about any language entry.

My University had offered me to study in France for a semester. I am still weighting my options. If I was unemployed, I would have left in a heartbeat but like I said, I am weighing my options.

It is definently worth it. Green light.
Even Adobe Photoshop can't change me.

A line[Durrand line] of hatred that raised a wall between the two brothers -Hamid Karzai

For generations, the Hindus of India prayed for deliverance from "the venom of the cobra, the teeth of the tiger and the vengeance of the Afghan."

The men of Kábul and Khilj also went home; and whenever they were questioned about the Musulmáns of the Kohistán (the mountains), and how matters stood there, they said, "Don't call it Kohistán, but Afghánistán; for there is nothing there but Afgháns and disturbances." Thus it is clear that for this reason the people of the country call their home in their own language Afghánistán, and themselves Afgháns. The people of India call them Patán; but the reason for this is not known. But it occurs to me, that when, under the rule of Muhammadan sovereigns, Musulmáns first came to the city of Patná, and dwelt there, the people of India (for that reason) called them Patáns—but God knows!

No man in my family would ever let me study abroad, forget going to another country, I'd never be allowed to move to another city!

Khair, I don't mind, our men are overprotective, it's just the way Pashtuns roll.

I'd say Turkey, since it's mainly Muslim so living there would be easier, with all the gorgeous masjids and halal food. Plus it has brill weather and is really beautiful. However, Italy is an awesome place to go and being a European citizen, so I'd feel more safe there (or Spain).

So wherever the course is best and where you'll have the most beneficial time.

I would side with Italy. Its good to experience new social norms.

Good question. I really dont know. I sat down with my father first. And i told him that i wanted to spend a semester abroad. At first he told me to go to Finland or London since i have relatives nearby, but i told him i wanted to go somewhere else. My father has always pushed me to reach the top of my educational goals. So he knew this is a great educational experience for me. Of course he wont let me stay for more than one semester, but hey at least i have the permission and support to do so

Thank you for your input. Can you tell me why it was horrible. Was Barcelona not an enjoyable place? Were you homesick? Or did you prefer elsewhere?

Please i need plenty of inputs

I am continuing my science classes towards my major, and some fun classes too, such as Women's Studies.

I am definitely more going towards Italy. I have always been wanting to go there. And for the program that i am going for is in Rome, so its perfect.

I am definitely going to go for it, i will regret it if i dont

I went to Athens for study abroad. The thing is Laila that the courses are a bit challenging due to the accent and weird customs. when you answer a question you have to stand up. too much home work.

I have also found programs for study abroad for students that have interest in the healthcare field, I wont get university credits, it counts as volunteer work. It ranges from 4-12 weeks. They have one for Spain, thats something i could also look at my senior year

Oh really. Was your courses all in English? or you had both languages? For how long were you abroad?

but its all experiences, i think its worth going to. Plus i have a lot of interest in Cultural Anthropology, it kinda goes with that.

It was for 1 semester. Yes they were in English but broken English. I am telling you its just really confusing. Once you leave the USA everything is so different.

I don't want to change your mind. I just want you to know how it is. Rome is a very expensive city.

I'd like to go back to Europe and study there.. My college actually has a program with Berlin (oh how convenient). But eeh. Situations, life, commitments, circumstances etc. are not permitting me to do so, for now at least. And most likely not any time soon either. =/

                            All good =)

Studying in Germany would obviously be easy for you.[We know why]You are already used to the social norms such as not getting a shopping bag when purchasing milk from a super-market. Getting charged to use a bathroom. Getting charged for asking for another ketchup packet. These were some of the few things that I had found astonishing on my visit to Germany. I bought a fish-filet in Koln, I asked for 2 ketchup packets and I got charged for it! You know how it is in the USA, Afghans even take ketchup home for free, lol.

Little things like this will shock our Laila.
