Nah, CSU is nowhere near as competitive as UC. I got into all the CSUs I applied to and none of the UCs I applied to.

So CSU is like an easy University? What are tuition costs for CSU? Why don't you go to CSU for 3 years and transfer to UC for your senior year?
Even Adobe Photoshop can't change me.

A line[Durrand line] of hatred that raised a wall between the two brothers -Hamid Karzai

For generations, the Hindus of India prayed for deliverance from "the venom of the cobra, the teeth of the tiger and the vengeance of the Afghan."

The men of Kábul and Khilj also went home; and whenever they were questioned about the Musulmáns of the Kohistán (the mountains), and how matters stood there, they said, "Don't call it Kohistán, but Afghánistán; for there is nothing there but Afgháns and disturbances." Thus it is clear that for this reason the people of the country call their home in their own language Afghánistán, and themselves Afgháns. The people of India call them Patán; but the reason for this is not known. But it occurs to me, that when, under the rule of Muhammadan sovereigns, Musulmáns first came to the city of Patná, and dwelt there, the people of India (for that reason) called them Patáns—but God knows!

@ Admin Khan, wokeh, same here, I get about $6,000 a year just for personal purposes, my tuition gets waived, I get my books paid for. But that's the official cost of attendance lol

CSU doesn't have as much prestige as UC. Also, they don't offer graduate programs and UC is more research orientated as far as I know =/
That's exactly what I mean. I don't think any country in the world gives its students waived tuition fees along with $6,000 dollars for personal purposes.

CSU's are good univeristies. Not really considered easy, like average i guess you can say. They come in third place on the rank though

          here is the rank:

          Ivy league: USC and Standford
UC's: Berkely, Santa Barbara, UCLA, Irvine, Davis, San Diego
then CSU's: Sacramento, San Fransicso, Long Beach, etc

CSU's are not as prestigous or competitive compared to UCs. Especially prep for medicine.

here is the problem from transferring to CSU to UC....its nearly impossible. UCs dont give that much spots to them, if any at all.

tuition for CSUs are about $10,000-$20,000 depending on the location and if you are boarding or commuting

I see. Why don't you apply for some scholarships? There are many scholarships that are available.

Unfortunately, when you transfer, the school requires that you study there for at least 60 credit hours, which is typically two years, before you can graduate from there. So, what many students do when such financial difficulties arise is to go to a community college -- or a state college that is not as expensive as the prestigious one that they wanna study in -- for the first two years of their college career and the last two years at their preferred one.

Scholarships seem to be the best option you have, Laila. Talk to your financial aid advisers. They're SUPPOSED to be able to help you find scholarships that match you to help you fund your education. FAFSA is not the only option; it's an excellent one if you qualify, because you get a lot of refund as well, but if you don't qualify, there are other options. I'm not talking about Fastweb or scholarships.com; I'm talking about scholarships that many, many, MANY universities and colleges offer, and almost always, they are independent of the students' or their parents' income (they usually depend on your GPA, though, but that shouldn't be a problem for you). Most states also have a unique scholarship that other states don't offer; check what it is for California.

Also check if your school has an honors program. As far as my knowledge about honors programs is concerned, they have more financial aid to offer their (honors) students, and I'm sure that in most cases, it's not dependent on your income. Check with your honors program for sure.

yeah scholarships are my only hope. I wont give up trying...it just kinda discouraged me last year because i didnt recieve anything after applying for two years. i only got one scholarship from the university i was supposedto attend, but then obviously i lost it......no biggie lol it was only for $1000.00.

oh and i cant work now, i have an unpaid job at the hospital for my medical school preparation. Oh and its meant to be unpaid, basically a volunteer job with more hours.

Kaiser is really good with volunteer students....or go to the nearest universities hospital, they are good with college students and allows more hands on experience.

You know, it doesn't have to be JUST volunteering All they want is experience. So try your best to seek someone who will pay you. When I wanted to be a doctor (psychiatrist, to be specific), I asked this one psychiatrist here if I could work with him, and he paid me bi-weekly, and the money was more than my tutoring at university offered me!

And it doesn't HAVE to be in a hospital. You can get a job at a private clinic near you -- dentist, psychiatrist, gynecologist, anyone -- by just talking to the people, networking as much as possible, and telling them that you know for sure you're gonna be a doctor but you don't know what kind yet (if this is untrue, don't worry; you can never be too sure what EXACTLY you'll be doing, since there are like thousands of different specialties in medicine), and you want to explore your options by working with person X. You can tell them that you'd prefer a job rather than volunteer work. There's ALWAYS someone who's desperate enough to have someone work for/with them.

According to my experiences, they're very pleasant and understanding because many had to go through the exact same thing you're going through.

If nothing else, you can start off as a volunteer, but once your supervisor sees how passionate and dedicated you are, she/he might actually start paying you. That's how it was for my sister.

yeah i just started working there under the name of a volunteer student. Plus the doctor i work with, she is great for letter of recommendation. And i like being at the hospital because i get to work in the labs with the lab area, the Nursery section, gift shops, etc....so i rotate around every 2 months.

but definitely after a year i am going to ask to get paid, because i have to drive an hour there.
