  • Financial Aid

How many of you college students are recieving financial aid? does it cover a good portion of your university tuiton, or you also have to put your own money in? I am not too familiar with financial aid because the fact is that i dont receive not one penny from state or federal. My parents make too much money to recieve any grants or certain scholarships (based on income). My parents have to pay my tuition from their retirement funds. Which kinda sucks for them, but i will eventually pay them back.

here is my problem with college:

I will have to pay nearly $40,000 a year for my university expenses. Now this only covers tuition, labs, books, room and board. On top of that, have living expenses. so maybe about $50,000 will be spent a year. I am transferring to either University of California, Irvine or UCLA. i havent chosen yet. But it will be so hard to pay for this amount of tuition because my family basically gets screwed by taxes. The more money you make, the more you get taxed. And on top of taxes, both my mother and father have to pay additional $15,000 each. Dunno why though. So the money they work really hard for to have saved for my expenses, it basically gets taken away. Leaving nothing. We were told that if we buy another house (?) then taxes will give us a little break. We have 3 houses in total, nothing is helping at all. But here is another thing, my parents still have their student loans to pay off from when they studied medicine here.

I do not want to take out student loans simply because i will be going to medical school. So i dont want to add on more to that debt.

Now i need help with all of this. If anyone is familiar with economics, what can be done about this. Or is it something i just have to live with.

    soooo HELP!

As far as I know, this is something you just have to live with =/
I know many people who just hide their finances, their bank accounts, their houses on the financial aid application. I don't know how that works, to be honest.. I'm the exact opposite of you, I don't have to pay a penny towards school, I get financial aid.

There are different kinds of financial aid. There are the Pell Grants which is money that is given to you based upon your need. Then there are Cal Grants which are given to you based upon your Academic Achievement and the time you do the FAFSA. And then there is the BOGG - fee waiver, which basically waives all your tuition and you don't have to pay anything towards it, you can't get that money out either though.

All in all, it is always safe to apply for Financial Aid, the primary application period is from 1/1 to 3/1. You never know what you might qualify for. Also, do consider scholarships. There are so many out there, and it's free money! With some, you just have to write an essay and get the money because so few people apply.

There are many great universities that are state owned or city owned. I know people that get paid to attend university. I understand your parents are making a lot of money but that doesn't mean your tuition bills have to be so high. If you lived in my state we have a program for all full-time students, It pretty much gives you up to $1,000 if you are full time. I guess we have it good? But like I said, nearly every Afghan gets paid about $2500 per semester for attending University. Could you believe that? Getting paid to go to School!

A local University here costs about 3000$ per semester(12+credits)(including textbooks and supplements). Why don't you look for a job Laila?
Even Adobe Photoshop can't change me.

A line[Durrand line] of hatred that raised a wall between the two brothers -Hamid Karzai

For generations, the Hindus of India prayed for deliverance from "the venom of the cobra, the teeth of the tiger and the vengeance of the Afghan."

The men of Kábul and Khilj also went home; and whenever they were questioned about the Musulmáns of the Kohistán (the mountains), and how matters stood there, they said, "Don't call it Kohistán, but Afghánistán; for there is nothing there but Afgháns and disturbances." Thus it is clear that for this reason the people of the country call their home in their own language Afghánistán, and themselves Afgháns. The people of India call them Patán; but the reason for this is not known. But it occurs to me, that when, under the rule of Muhammadan sovereigns, Musulmáns first came to the city of Patná, and dwelt there, the people of India (for that reason) called them Patáns—but God knows!

even the local university is still a lot of tuition.

I mean all UC's (University of California) schools are about $30-40,000.

Plus the school i will transfer to is a good and competitive school. Especially for medicine.

How much do students from other states pay?

That's so cheap. Cost of attendance for my Community College (!!) is about $10,000 a year. UCLA and UCI are all public, the whole UC system is; but tuition and especially room and board can be really expensive.

OMG I didn't think of this before: Laila jaan, when you come down here, you have to realize that you will be filing as an 'independent student' and not a 'depended student'. That means that once you don't live with your parents anymore they are not expected to cover your expenses anymore. So yeah, you might qualify for a buncha financial aid. I say you consult a counselor or financial aid person at your college or get in touch with the Fin Aid office at UCLA/ UCI.

Yeah :/ i apply to FAFSA every year. And when my results come for what i qualify, its an absolute zero. Even when i talked to the financial aid office of the univeristy, they are open and honestly tell me your parents are a problem lol. But its not fair though. They work hard, they are a huge percentage of taxpayers, but its like we dont get a break, not even tax deductibles.

When i was in high school, my GPA was high, i had a 4.0, but i got nothing from Cal Grants. I know there are two types of Cal Grants, still nothing.

Yeah dude i have applied to scholarships over and over, especially fastweb. I got one scholarship only for a grand my first year. Thats it.

Lucky you. But i do believe California in general is pretty harsh with their university tuitions. Even if i was to commute to a university nearby, i am still paying about $15,000. But that school is not competitive for my field :/

I used to work at a clinic, no more. but then my small income added onto to my parents taxes. I have an unpaid job at a hospital now.

But like they should at least give a break. Like at least make my labs and books tax deductible.

I wish! no i am still dependent. As long as i am still in my undergraduate study, even when i move to my apartment, i am still dependent student.

If i move out, and live by myself for one whole year, i can declare independent and get financial aid. Or if i get married and declare dependence on my husbands income. Other than that, i am kinda stuck.

LOL California community colleges are still crazy. My brother goes to one now because my parents cant have both of us going to UC's at the same time.

I don't understand the price hike. We have many, many great institutions and the tuition is what I listed above. What about California State University?

$10,000 a year? Our senior colleges charge no more than $3,000 per semester. If you are a US citizen and making below average not only is your college free but you will also be receiving money.

Canada doesn't even acknowledge the units we take here lol

@ Admin Khan, wokeh, same here, I get about $6,000 a year just for personal purposes, my tuition gets waived, I get my books paid for. But that's the official cost of attendance lol

CSU doesn't have as much prestige as UC. Also, they don't offer graduate programs and UC is more research orientated as far as I know =/
