  • Forensic Medicine

I have to cover the whole of forensic medicine (revision) during Ramadan and so whoever wants to know what im studying, ill explain topics to them while i am revising it..

The first topic in forensic medicine is related to the law. So it is called Forensic medicine and law related to medical man.

So you have to know the definition of forensic medicine which is:

A branch of medical sciences which deals with the application of medical knowledge to the administration of the law and furthering of justice.

Then we have to learn about LAW

Now that depends which country you live in. In Pakistan they have common law and statute law.

      Common law-Jirga system
Statute law-Is criminal law and civil law

Criminal law involves the criminal cases
Civil law involves like land disputes, marriage and so on

You should know about the types of courts.

Criminal and Civil courts. Like i said before each country is different.

Do you want me to go into the detail of the law relating to homicide and these things, coz we have to study that for Pakistan law. Whereas in UK it is different. There is no Qisas and Diyat act here.

I think i will leave the law bit out of forensic medicine here because we have different laws. But basically you should know what the law says about Murder, rape, abortion, harm, injury, negligence and so on

                Next Chapter

Examination of hair, blood, semen and saliva

Why do we have to examine these things????

Because all these things can provide clues. Like when somebody is killed if you find hair you can trace it to somebody and so on.

So in forensic medicine you have to carry out tests to prove what you found is blood or semen or hair and so on.

                  Medicoloegal aspect of hair

                  Identification
                  Investigation of crime
                  Time since death

If you find a hair, you can figure out like the race, age and sex of that individual.
You must be able to distinguish between animal hair and human hair through tests

In Pakistan they have a law called Qisas and Diyat ordinance

Qisas-It just means a punishment by causing similar hurt at same part of body of convict as he has caused to the victim.

Like an eye for an eye etc...

Diyat-Is compensation to the family of deceased. It is equal to 30630g of silver

Then there is something called ARSH

Arsh is basically compensation not for the death but for hurt.

Then there is DAMAN which is compensation based on factors other than death or hurt, like loss of disability or emotional aspect

                            LAW RELATING TO DEATH

                            Three types of Killing:

                            Miscarriage, Homicide and Suicide

                            HOMICIDE

You have 4 types of Homicide

Qatl-i-amd-This is KILLING with intention and knowledge of causing death (pre-planned)

Qatl-Shibh-i-amd-KILLING with intention to harm only, but death occurs which in unlikely

Qatl-i-Khata-KILLING without intention to cause death or harm but death occurs by mistake of act or fact

Qatl bis-sabab-KILLING without intention to cause death or harm but death occurs through an unlawful act (like drunk)

If mothers life is at risk then miscarriage is permitted
