See, here's the difference.. There is a difference between Pashtuns and
Pashto-speakers, right? Like you said, there are a bunch of Tajiks in
Qandahar who speak Pashto - and Pashto only. (This actually applies to half
of my family) Likewise, there are many Pashtuns who might only speak
Dari because of the location they live in or the circumstances under which
they grew up.
Now since the Pashto grammar is more complex, more sophisticated and
more complicated than Dari grammar (or many other grammars) it is
easier for a native Pashto speaker to learn a language that is simpler than
Pashto (and I dare say most languages are) - he is sort of downgrading
grammar-wise. Whereas for a native Dari speaker who is not used to
making changes to adjectives, verbs, nouns and even pronouns depending
on gender it will be very, very difficult to even understand the concept of
gender differentiation in any language. The Pashto syntax is more complex
than the Dari syntax.. the Pashto alphabet has more letters than the Dari
alphabet, the Pashto verb conjugation is trickier than the Dari verb
conjugation etc.
So if your personal standard is very high, it is easy for you to adapt to a
lower standard.. and likewise, if your standard is very low, it is difficult for
you to adapt to a higher standard.
(Please don't get me wrong I love Dari and Pashto both equally and both
are extremely amazing languages that never cease to fascinate me.)
