If you're a woman living in the United States, you're six times more likely to be depressed than a man living in China, says a new study.
In the first cross-national survey of its kind, nearly 90,000 people in 18 countries were screened for major depressive episodes using a standardized set of questions. Researchers found that people living in wealthier nations are more likely to have experienced a depressive episode than those in low and middle-income countries. The study was conducted by researchers from the State University of Stony Brook as part of the WHO's World Mental Health Survey Initiative.

Nearly 15 percent of those living in the 10 rich nations reported having at least one depressive episode in their lifetime. For poorer countries, the prevalence of a depressive episode was only 11 percent. The two most depressed countries are France, with a 21 percent prevalence, and the U.S., with a 19 percent prevalence.
The researchers also went on to study the socioeconomic factors affecting depression. They found that regardless of location, women are almost twice as likely to experience depression. In wealthy nations, income levels are another predictor of depression: poor respondents carry double the risk of depression.
So what's causing this cross-national divide in depression levels? The study's researchers speculate that one reason could be the sharp income inequality in wealthy nations. Any other possible reason is the low level of awareness about mental illness in poorer countries. Or, say the researchers, it could be perhaps just be that depression is an illness of affluence.

The cure for depression is found in this Pashto proverb:

        pe harakat ki barakat di

translated to modern American : ' you'll feel better once you get off your butt '

That aphorism doesn't make any sense.

kais is right it still doesn't make sense.

Harrakat means gesture or to stir a action, bharkat means reward blessing.

It doesn't translate to what you translated it to, unless you was spicing it up.

                  Then i can understand.

According to the textbook it's "In movement, there is blessing"

Just googled it and it came up on this page

دداسې حرکت قوت چې په هغه کې فرد او ټولنې ته خير وي
اسلام انسان ته ور زده کوي چې په حرکت کې برکت دى

what you do is find the reason as to why you are depressed and then do something about it. cry as much as you want and about whatever that you need to cry about but when you are done, you wash you face and move on with life. you don't come back to the same subject and cry some more about it or search around for self pity because that would just make things worse.
this harakat and barakat thing is a metaphor. it's not about a physical move that you make but a figurative one.
like dedicating a thread to yourself about depression...is it some sort of museum that you are collecting some sort of artistic pieces in it?? don't sit and knit. do something that forces your brain to be active busy. or if nothing else works, have some sugar.

"To burn always with this hard gemlike flame, to maintain this ecstasy, is success in life."

What happens if you lost the will to live. How would someone get it back?

It isnt important why but am interested in how to get it back. Like for example, if I had the option to pass away tonight I would take it in a heart beat.

I have taken your advice of not feeling sorry for oneself. But I need to slowly rekindle the candle of life.

I currently attend school, have a job, go to the gym and play basketball so I do keep it moving. But I still don't care about life, like I used too.

I admit I do need help.

change your thought process, none of that garbage psychologist crap they tell you about going out there and making new friends and blah blah but seriously consider what is worth living for or at least holding out for until its your time.

ive been there bro. not like my life is amazing by any means but i do what i do to get by until allah decides its time to drop dead. what i did was realize that my life is relatively good compared to a lot of afghans back home and came to the conclusion that i was being a bitch and i decided to man up. the whole working life, worrying about money, and all that bs is just going through the motions until we meet allah. in the end it doesn't matter but for now it is what it is for the time being.

its kind of the same way when i am somewhere and i want to laugh at a wrong moment which would draw attention to me, i think of some poor old afghan back home to kill any laughter. its weird but actually works, i kind of bring that method to my everyday life. i know it seems bad to feel better at the sake of someone else's lot but its that contrast which makes me feel like my life is alright in comparison to what it could be.

There are people today who think that admitting God’s absolute greatness decreases the value and importance of humans in the creation, as if God and mankind are rivals competing in greatness and power. Meanwhile I feel that whenever our perception of God’s greatness increases, with it we become greater, because we are the creation of a great God.
