  • Excess Weight Gain May Increase Risk of Prostate Cancer

We are all aware of the plethora of complications that can arise from packing on excess pounds, the most common being high blood pressure, elevated cholesterol and diabetes. Obesity also results in an increased risk of stroke, heart disease, and some forms of cancer. In females, there is up to a threefold increase in the incidence of breast, cervical and ovarian cancer, while the risk of endometrial cancer is up to seven times higher. For men, there is an increased incidence of colon cancer and, according to a new study—prostate cancer, especially for white men who gained excess weight in young adulthood.

To find out more about the relationship between weight and prostate cancer, researchers at the University of Hawaii collected and analyzed on nearly 84,000 men of different ethnic groups; African-Americans, Japanese, Latinos, Native Hawaiians and Caucasians, all of whom had participated in a long-term study called the Multiethnic Cohort. Overall, more than 5,500 were diagnosed with prostate cancer.

While the researchers found that “body mass in both younger and older adulthood, and weight gain between these periods of life, may influence prostate cancer risk,” the degree of risk varied depending upon when men put on the excess weight, their race and ethnicity. For example, higher weight gain in older adulthood was associated with increased risk of prostate cancer among Caucasian and Native Hawaiian men and a decreased risk among Japanese men.

Caucasian men who gained excess weight in young adulthood increased their risk of advanced or high-grade prostate cancers, the most dangerous form, while African-American men increased their risk for less hazardous, localized and low-grade forms of the disease.

Study author Brenda Y. Hernandez, an assistant professor at the Cancer Research Center of Hawaii, speculated that genes and lifestyle may account for the differences in risk. “The relationship of certain characteristics, such as body size, with cancer risk may vary across ethnic groups due to the combined influence of both genes and lifestyle,” she said. “This study underscores the importance of investigating cancer etiology in diverse populations.”

However, Victoria Stevens, strategic director of laboratory services at the American Cancer Society said that while the study shows there are risk differences between ethnic groups, the differences are not clearly defined. “Their findings aren’t definitive,” Stevens said. “They are just not clear-cut—you don’t see a simple linear relationship.” She added that it also remains unclear whether weight gain is as important in prostate cancer as it is for other malignancies. “Exactly what that risk is, we still don’t know.”

Prostate cancer is the most common non-skin cancer in America, affecting 1 in 6 men. Age is the biggest risk factor for developing the disease. Although only 1 in 10,000 under age 40 will be diagnosed, the rate rises to 1 in 38 for ages 40 to 59, and 1 in 15 for ages 60 to 69. In fact, more than 65 percent of all prostate cancers are diagnosed in men over the age of 65.

However, race and family history are important factors as well. According to previous research, African American men are 61 percent more likely to develop prostate cancer compared with Caucasian men and are nearly 2.5 times as likely to die from the disease. Men with a single first-degree relative—father, brother or son—with a history of prostate cancer are twice as likely to develop the disease, while those with two or more relatives are nearly four times as likely to be diagnosed. The risk is even higher if the affected family members were diagnosed at a young age, with the highest risk seen in men whose family members were diagnosed before age 60.

Social and environmental factors, particularly diet and lifestyle, likely play a role as well. In fact, recent research has shown that diet modification might decrease the chances of developing prostate cancer, reduce the likelihood of having a recurrence, or help slow the progression of the disease.

The full report is published in the September issue of Cancer Epidemiology.

A line[Durrand line] of hatred that raised a wall between the two brothers -Hamid Karzai

For generations, the Hindus of India prayed for deliverance from "the venom of the cobra, the teeth of the tiger and the vengeance of the Afghan."

The men of Kábul and Khilj also went home; and whenever they were questioned about the Musulmáns of the Kohistán (the mountains), and how matters stood there, they said, "Don't call it Kohistán, but Afghánistán; for there is nothing there but Afgháns and disturbances." Thus it is clear that for this reason the people of the country call their home in their own language Afghánistán, and themselves Afgháns. The people of India call them Patán; but the reason for this is not known. But it occurs to me, that when, under the rule of Muhammadan sovereigns, Musulmáns first came to the city of Patná, and dwelt there, the people of India (for that reason) called them Patáns—but God knows!

Even though there is the good old saying 'Too much of anything is not good' I always knew eating too much had a consequence.

Actually a lot of men gain weight after their 30's very easily, even if they do have a good diet....its when testosterone levels goes down, men gain weight in the belly area.

The thing is, you never, i repeat, never want to gain weight. Once you gain a few pounds here and there, its a hard to shed them. Once your belt size gets bigger, your risk for heart disease, colon, and prostate cancer increases.

very true... keep a check on your calories... in order to lose weight you have to create a deficit of calories in your everyday calorie requirement.....its then when the fat starts burning and one starts loosing weight.....if your daily requirement is 2500 Kilo Calories... then consume only 2200... so create a deficit of 300 Kilocalories...in a month you would lose 9000 Kilo calories which would make you loose 4 to 5 Kilograms a month... again there are going to be individual differences and different bodies will react differently...

to maintain your wait.... one should just eat the required number of calories ...

but i have seen people eating beyond limit and never gaining weight and there are unlucky few who would put on weight only by the sight or aroma of the food....

You need to watch exactly what you eat, and make sure you are not completely full. You do need to keep a good healthy diet along with the proper amount of exercise daily. Its okay to gain a couple pounds here and there, and happens to all of us, but gaining 10 lbs or more is not good. Drink plenty of water, fruits, veggies, just overall be cautious of yourself, if you do, you will be okay.

thts what exactly my doctor suggested toooo...... eat a few small meals in a day rather than eating 2 or 3 big ones.......

the reason being when we take a few small meals during a day, our digestive system is active throughout and that also burns a lot of calories....
even eating say a biscuit in every 2 hour is suggested by dietitians....

so firstly creating a deficit of calories in our daily calorie requirements which helps to lose weight secondly and secondly eating small meals which also burns calories.... thats involuntary burning of calories...

voluntary burning of calories would be be in active in aerobic or anaerobic activities...

as laila said drinking a lot of water is important and it is complementary to the diet program as it clears all toxins from our body......

Well said The point is you should eat every two-three hours, but very lightly. You should be drinking 8-10 cups of water through out the day. You should be urinating every 2-3 hours. The point is to keep your energy going, its consistency helps to keep and lose needed calories.

drinking lots of water definitely help to improve health and also as i have mentioned earlier improves complexion. And only drinking water doesnt help to lose weight but it complements weight loss if you are following any diet or waste loss program. People following the same weight loss program, the ones drinking more water lose more weight than the ones who drink comparatively less water.

Yes when i heard my father refer to that, i thought it was hilarious. But what sucks is that women usually start menopause around 45-55 years of age. 'Male Menopause' usually starts in the 30's.

For both men and women in their 30's: if you eat the same things that you ate when you were a teen or early 20's, good luck with you!:D
