Afghan Air Force Provides Cover for Troops in Four Provinces

Afghan Air Force (AAF) Commander Abdul Wahab Wardak on Wednesday confirmed that the AFF is now providing major air support for ground troops in four of the country's most insecure provinces, including Badakhshan, Kunduz, Ghazni and Zabul. The commander said the AAF has not needed assistance from foreign forces in its recent operations.
According to Commander Wardak, 18 AAF helicopters are currently deployed in the field, helping cover Afghan National Army (ANA) soldiers and Afghan National Police (ANP) personnel sweeping through a number of provinces on a large-scale counter-offensive aimed at putting militant groups back on their heels.
"Afghan Air Force units are deployed in eight zones right now, and there are enough helicopters to provide support to the military operations going on in Badakhshan, Zabul, Ghazni and Kunduz provinces," Wardak said on Wednesday.
But Afghan security officials have said that training more pilots and securing more aircrafts for the AAF is crucial, as better air support would mean less ground troop casualties, which have steadily increased in recent years. Currently, the NATO alliance is leading up the training and equipping of the AAF.
Six American helicopters have been provided for training to the Afghan forces. "These fighter helicopters contain two machine guns and each one of them has 600 bullets including a mortar," one Afghan pilot told TOLOnews.
The AAF's arsenal of combat helicopters is expected to increase to 17 by the end of this year. In total, the U.S. has pledged more than 20 military helicopters to Afghanistan, but the exact date for their delivery remains unconfirmed. In addition, India recently committed four cargo helicopters to the Afghan Air Force.
"Promises have been made to provide us cargo and fighter helicopters by November, including support and light aircraft," Commander Wardak said. "We have also dispatched pilots and technical personnel to the U.S., and they have been trained well and conducted flights."
The AAF helicopters are critical carriers on the battlefield not just because they transport Afghan casualties, but also because they are needed to transport militant prisoners that are captured and brought to Bagram jail.
The AAF at the moment has 50 cargo and support aircrafts, including 25 transformational and light planes, and four big cargo aircrafts. The AAF still lacks medium-range cargo aircraft.
This is all BS. In Kunduz, the gov is begging the militias to help them which basically says the country is going back to 90's. The US moronic policy makers accomplished nothing but killed poor people and turned the country backwards.
Police on Sunday confirmed the arrest in Bamiyan of a top insurgent commander and former Jihadi leader, who has ties to both Taliban and Daesh, officials have confirmed.
According to local police chief Khodayar Qudosi, Ibrahim Shokhak was arrested Friday by police after having long posed a problem in the province.
Following his arrest, Shokhak allegedly confessed to scores of crimes and told police that he had close ties with Daesh and was in fact being funded by the organization.
He said the funding received was earmarked to be used to launch attacks against schools and military checkpoints.
He also admitted to having captured a checkpoint in Panjab district during last year's elections and to having killed two police officers including post commander Sayed Akbar and to having carried out numerous attacks on convoys.
He said that following this attack he fled with his men to the mountainous region of Behsood where he took refuge in the houses of civilians.
At one point he returned to Panjab however and has admitted to having set a mobile phone tower on fire three days ago.
In Friday's operation, Shokhak was arrested, one of his insurgents was killed and the rest escaped, said the police chief. However, no details were available as to exactly how many insurgents were linked to Shokhak's operation.
Qudosi did however say that Shokhak is believed to have traveled to Pakistan on a regular basis. He added that Shokhak had posed a "real threat" to the province.
- There are also lots of news articles about lots of Taliban fighters being killed by the Afghan security forces. I do not post them as I abhor death and gain no joy from it.
The death of young men who mistakenly chose to fight for what they believed was a heroic resistance is a tragedy.

There had also been a meeting in Qatar in May, but the Taliban had insisted that remain a “track-two” affair, with no government representatives involved. They always refused face-to-face meetings with the government on the grounds that it was a puppet regime; they said they would only talk to its American paymasters. The discussions in Murree included Afghanistan’s deputy foreign minister, Hekmat Karzai, a nephew of former president.
1. The Taliban always refused to speak to the Afghan government, now they have had to humiliatingly speak to them.
This is a sign of the increasing success of the Afghan government and armed forces against these Pakistani-backed militants.
2. The pressure on the Taliban almost certainly comes from their sponsors, the Pakistanis (army and ISI) who are in turn probably being pressurized by the Chinese.
China wants to tackle radicalism and militancy in this area which borders its strategic heavily Muslim region of Xian Jiang.
3. If more radical elements of the Taliban feel betrayed by the Pakistan-based Taliban leadership then they may break off, but divided the militants will be weaker.
The Afghans also need to get the Turks involved to pile heavy pressure on the Pakistanis to end their support for terrorists.
Dostum, the head of Turks (Uzbeks, Turkmens) in Afghanistan is the man that can do that.
With China, Russia, Iran, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan and others all pressurizing the Pakistani regime and military we may see more concessions even after this major historic significant submission by the Taliban that they will have to speak to the Afghan government direct.
The Taliban and their masters the Pakistanis are feeling the heat.
The MD-530 Warrior, locally known as “Jengi” has made a successful combat debut against militants in eastern Nangarhar province.
Capt. Cory Fale, helicopter pilot and MD-530 advisor at Train, Advise, Assist Command-Air (TAAC-Air) of NATO’s Resolute Support mission said that MD-530 was the number one concern for insurgents during the Nangarhar mission.
“The MD-530 was the insurgent’s number one concern in Nangarhar,” he said, adding that, “It was great seeing the pride beaming from the Afghan aircrews as they climbed out of their helicopters from their first combat mission.”
MD-530 Warrior is a close-air attack aircraft and it has been newly added to the arsenal of the Afghan Air Force. It is designed for high altitude and hot weather operations.
“The addition of armed MD-530s to the Afghan Air Force is pivotal following the January 2015 reduction in coalition airpower,” Capt. Fale added.
Afghanistan received six MD-530 aircrafts at the first quarter of current year and it will have a total of 16 of them by early 2016.

* Afghan aerial power is increasing day by day.
* Militants are turning on each over e.g. ISIS v Taliban and Taliban v Taliban.
* Afghanistan now has the largest army in central Asia at around 170,000.
The second biggest army in central Asia is Kazakhstan which as 60,000 but is territorialy the largest country in the Muslim world.
The Afghan government retains control of the provincial capitals of all of Afghanistan's 34 provinces.
The national government enjoys control of the vast majority of the population and the important parts of the country including the capital, regional and provincial capitals.
The Afghan military will only increase in power due to increased air power, with China, Russia, India, Iran and Turkey all opposed to a Taliban regime in Kabul.
The Taliban are weaker now than they were two years ago with the death of their leader Mullah Omar being reported, their division in to different hostile factions and Taliban and ISIS killing each other.
