Shooting Down the First Soviet Su-25

One of the most lethal weapons used by the Soviet Union in Afghanistan was their latest fighter bomber, the SU-25.

During one of its night engagements with the Pakistani F-16 inside Pakistan, the SU-25 was shot down and its Russian pilot who ejected was taken POW. The Pilot of the SU-25, Colonel Rudskoi Alexander Vladimirovich, was also the Inspector of SU-25s deployed in Afghanistan.

He was eventually handed over to the Russian authorities on 16 August 1988. This officer rose to the position of Vice President of Russia in 1991.

Squadron Leader Athar Bukhari of No 14 Squadron was the pilot of the F-16 while this night interception was conducted on radar by Squadron Leader Taufiq Raja.

Shooting Down the First Soviet Aircraft

    a. Pilot: Squadron Leader Athar Bokhari
    b. Controller: Squadron Leader Taufeeq Raja
    c. Date: August 4, 1988
    d. Aircraft Shot: Su-25
    e. Area: 10 NM West of Miranshah (Boya)

In those days, in addition to the scrambles that had then become routine, two or three pairs of F-16s would fly CAPs in the west on a regular basis. On this day, a scramble was ordered half an hour before sunset. As the No. 2 of the detailed formation was not yet fully night current, the leader decided to go alone. On the initial vector, he was at full throttle. As the violating aircraft had turned back, he was asked near Hangu to fly at normal speed and to set up a race course CAP pattern north of Bannu at 10,000 feet. The next fifty minutes were uneventful as he kept flying at 120/300 degrees. By this time, it was dark. Then came the opportunity for a kill, so narrated by the pilot:

I was vectored on a heading of 300 degrees, and the controller reported the target 30 degree left, 15 NM. I turned left and called contact. The GCI controller clearly told me to go ahead and shoot the target. I achieved a head-on IR lock on one aircraft at 7 NM flying high. He started to turn right at 6.5 NM, putting me on at 3.5 NM. I engaged burners and closed to less than 2.5 NM from the target before the desired launch zone (DLZ) started to flash. As all the parameters were met, I fired the missile and saw it go towards the target in the TD box on the HUD. I next saw a ball of fire in the TD box. I broke left to 120 degrees, descended to 5,000 feet, and dispensed chaff and flares. On looking back at the 8 o'clock position, I saw 4-5 flares at about 3-4 NM and mistook them initially for missiles. It all about stopped my heartbeat but my controller reassured me that there were no other aircraft in the vicinity. I then took a safe passage home.

The wreckage of the shot down aircraft was located, but not the pilot. The tribal people caught him the next evening and handed him over to the authorities. His name was Colonel Alexander Rutskoi who later became the Vice President of the Russian Federation. Both the pilots and the controller displayed calm professional competence in shooting down the first Soviet-piloted Su-25 aircraft at night. It was an excellent example of pilot-controller teamwork.

Its not that hard to understand. America has created Pakistan in South Asia to do its dirty work and Israel in middle east to do its dirty work.

The day Pakistan doesn't obey American command(from NY or Washington) is the day they not only will blow your military in days but they will send you back to stone ages.
Pakistan operates an airforce with a fleet of about 700 aircraft. Less than 100 are of american origin

ISI started off as British product and now since Britain itself is an American puppet, AMERICA has taken over its foreign affairs.

A Pakistani president can't even use the bathroom if an American says no.
Take it as whatever you like bro I'm just putting down some facts cuz ur a fair person and I wouldn't have bothered to explain this to anyone else..

US tried everything to stop Pakistan from getting the nukes, Everyone did, Pakistan which was heavily dependent on US for military hardware got shunned..our F16s were grounded, but we picked ourselves up and started indigenous production programs in collaboration with China and other countries

The result ? Pakistan today isn't depedent on US for it's weapons..they give us money yes that's true but acquiring weapons systems is a whole different case..JF 17 J 10 these are Going to be Pakistan's frontline fighters..Pakistan is not only making JF 17 but has about $5 billion worth of contracts lined up for it. It took part in worlds biggest airshow at fanborough..J-10 is coming from china with full transfer of technogy, so are the frigates with the last one being " completely made" in Pakistan..Read up on Pakistan's MBT al-Khalid which is being sold to countries world wide..Agosta's, the Chineese Yuan Class Subs, Turkey's Milgem class corvettes..Italian supersonic air defence system and a Falco Drone Program..all of these things are being produced in Pakistan and they have nothing to do with the US

Army was strictly against accepting any aid from the US, our politicians are corrupt yes no questions there

Pakistani Generals are the most corrupt creatures on earth who create puppet politicians in their GHQ. Just read the newest revelation from a General's politician Pir Pagara, a faithful servant of the Paki Army, which he issued right today.

James @ I never was comparing US to Pakistan in economic or military expenditure terms so I don't really see the point of your post but do look up how much of USA's foreign debt is 'owned' by China..in 2009 it was topping 772 Billion USD

Just so that we are clear, India wouldn't bother Pakistan if it leaves us alone. Pakistan has nothing that we covet.
Pakistan is just a convenient stick, that US uses to keep India tied down in Indian subcontinent. Even China has realized that the c*ndom has its uses.

Aid does not come for free. or does it?

I think this was an informative thread. Above all, thanks Talal for sharing this with us. Do make more threads in the future.

I hope you arent the type who get's offended in political discussions, this is meant to be fruitful.
how many AC's you see that are in service with PAF that are of American Origin. Less than 100 and that was my point to begin with.. Pakistan 'doesn't' get all of it's military equipment from US. Our only goal is to become independent in weapons production and you can see that in all of our ongoing military ventures

I'm not offended Jasmine, not in the least bit. I am dissapointed at the divide that exists between Pakistanis and Afghans but its a fact and theres not much I can do about it.

I just thought this tid bit might be interesting to some that a Russian Vice President was a POW whose AC was the first ever Su-25 to be shot down

talal is making a big deal out of it, yes true Rudskoe was shot down twice, when he was flying in pakistani air space, but who captured him?
he was taken by mujahideen at that time treated very fairly by them according to pashtun customs, when he was a prisoner he grew big moustach impressed by the bravery of pashtuns and their humane treatment. he considered the big moustach were mostly pashtun tradition.

No. He is talking of the huge money through Kerry-Lugars' bill.

By the way what you got to say about Karzai begging americans not to leave Afghanistan. Dont you think its an insult to Afghan people for showing them that they are not capable of defending themselves?
For your information Afghanistan has passed through a 30 years long Paki imposed devastating wars.

BTW, on such occassions you show your true colors, your hate for Pashtuns and your servile attitude towards Punjab vis a vis Pashtun(afghan) nation.
