Pakistan Field Update: Afghan Refugees face new problems

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan, August 20 (UNHCR). The UN Refugee Agency is increasingly concerned about the plight of flood-affected Afghan refugees in Pakistan, some of whom are now under pressure to repatriate by speculators around Peshawar seeking to develop land that until now has been occupied by refugee settlements.
With 1.7 million Afghan refugees, Pakistan has one of the world's largest refugee populations. More than 1.5 million of these are in affected provinces, dozens of Afghan refugee villages have been damaged, and several are completely destroyed. In Khyber Pakhtunkwa province alone, more than 12,000 dwellings in refugee villages have been swept away leaving almost 70,000 people homeless.
Many of the Afghan refugee settlements in Pakistan were established some 30 years ago after the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan triggered the first wave of refugees. At the time the settlements were in remote areas or on the edges of cities. Over the years, the land has become more valuable as cities have grown.
UNHCR welcomes the assurances from federal authorities that all people affected by the floods should be able to return to their homes to rebuild, including Afghan refugees. The Ministry of State and Frontier Regions and the Chief Commissioner for Afghan Refugees have also given assurances refugees have the right to return to their dwellings. We hope that local arrangements can be made quickly to ensure the spirit of this commitment cascades down to all levels, and moves by land speculators are stymied.
One of the worst hit refugee villages has been Azakheil in Nowshera district in Pakistan's northwest. Here more than 23,000 people lost homes. A UNHCR technical team is on its way today to assess the feasibility of rebuilding on the site. Over the next few days, the provincial government is expected to decide whether the village can be rebuilt on the same site or whether residents will have to relocate to another settlement in the same district.
In the damaged refugee camps around Peshawar, Afghans are picking through the mud trying to salvage what they can from their homes. Most have sought shelter elsewhere for the moment, and are scattered in surrounding communities with relatives or in makeshift shelters. Since the floods hit at the end of July, UNHCR has distributed tents and other shelter supplies – for example, cooking sets and sleeping materials – to the worst-hit families. We are also preparing to rebuild infrastructure including schools, health points and water and sanitation facilities in refugee villages and surrounding communities in cooperation with local authorities and humanitarian partners.

I was really shocked and saddened by this, especially by this part "some of whom are now under pressure to repatriate by speculators around Peshawar seeking to develop land that until now has been occupied by refugee settlements." It's so sad how some people exploit tragedy for financial gain

That has always been the case. Refugees and IDPs have been exploited since the beginning. It is easy money.

If peshawaris are such then why afghans dont return to afghanistan to avoid harrasment and abusing by peshawer. Why they have to insist on staying in pakistan if they feel they have no respect there.

        what are u talking about?
they think they are in their own land
they think they are with their own pashtoons..

they are not in peshawar for enjoyment.. ofcoarse they went to pakistan to save their lives.. i dono why do some ppl get offended when somene says the truth.. its true that we were not only called Majajirs but most of people used to call us Gilamjan .
Calling someone and disrespecting him,her is not a big deal for those people who are influenced by lapai aatei hai dua ban kai tamana mairi.. but the worse thing is that they think most of our Afghan women are prostitues... whenever an afghan woman is seen in the market or outside her home,, ppl arelike.. hagha da majira ra wowata.. khudai khabar bia cherta zei , cha kor ta zei and bla bla..

ka zama wass wochalaigei no da pekhawar 70% NARINA pa dar zarawum.. Talibans are way good for them too.

        Pakhtoon means ghairati insan
pakhtoon means that person tsok chei khpal aw pa prado bandai parda wachawi
Pakhton means yaw insan chei da nang namos da para zan qurban kei
pakhtana means hagha qawm sok chei hamaish da Islam pa lara tlalay dei

Za kho da de nan saba pakhtana specially (some) living in peshawar.. i dont and i cant cal some of them pakhtoons..
whats there in them to be called pakhtoons?
ghairat?himat? pakhtoonwali? being together? being aggressive? being a protector of Lar aw bar Pakhtoons?

Hagha chei drana pakhtana dei hagha pakhpala pohaigei chei tsomra obo kai dei da nan saba pakhtana

Zmonga pa dai forum kai da khyber pakhtonkhwa yaw tso respected member dei.. we have some respected members from khyber pakhtonkhwa whom we can call the real, pure, clean , ghairati and brave pakhtoons...

someone comes and says i was disrespected in peshawar and called Mahajir.. instead of listening to her u say.. Why do u live there?

Is this what we call pashtunwali?
we are famous for our hospitality in the world.. where is the hospitality in today's pashtoons?

khudai khabar chei da nan saba zwanan pa cheshei akhta dei.. pa cheshai lagya dei chei khpala pakhto ham worna wroka shawai da..
You are not a pakhtoon by hanging a flag of pakhtonkhwa in ur profile or under ur siggy .. A piece of cloth or paper wont make u pakhtoon.. you must be a pakhtoon in ur heart..

About some zwanan in peshawar who call us mahajir or gilamjam
check the net, check youtube , check their clips..

I hope that our respected elders from Khyber pakhtonkhwa wont mind for what i said, I believe that they are aware of these things and they know about how A pakhtoon feels when he is called Mahajir in Pakhtonkhwa

This is true...and unfortunate. The tragic thing about peshawar city is that some people from Afghanistan think that all Pashtunkhwa are all like that. Which is a little unfair considering the treatment in areas like dir, buner, malakand, qibaeel, quetta was not like this.

Kho bya hamm agha geela da haq da. What is more tragic is that if Peshawar city goes through tough times, the same way Panjab and Sindh closed their doors on the IDPs of swat and buner..they will do the same to them. Then they will have to go to Kabul...khwand ba wokee ka zanre wortha agha shaan spak ogoree.

Swabai also hosted many Pashtuns from different parts but their treatment was far better than peshawar city. So people should remember the hospitality of swabai pashtuns when considering pashtunkhwa.

              Dear sher khan

i am not talking about what panjabiz did or do there are many things which panjabiz did and doing to Pahstoons on both sides of ther border....... I was talking about my own pashtoons

so you said the rents in hayatabad went up thats y pekhawri pashtoons started calling us with bad names?

A pashtoons izat is nothing in front of money for a pekhawari?
You should re-read my previous post

I didnt tlak about other villages or other places.. i was talking about city ppl.. city of peshawar starting from kar khano.

The village ppl had very less problems with Afghans and thats why a year ago thousands of families went to khost gardiz from Pakhtonkhwa duirng taliban vs pakistan army fight game and faced no problem over there..

By raising rents it basically means that they took advantage of the Afghanistan refugees and also the pashtunkhwa IDPs. To them the refugees/idps were easy money so rents went through the roof to exploit the situation.

The problems that the refugees from Afghanistan faced in peshawar are now going through the IDPs of other areas. I remember when the crisis hit the people of malakand division, the stories that came out of the camps were horrible. Altha khalk bas dagha khabara kawalla che tsa lobaa da Afghansitna pashtano saraa oshwaa pa campoona agha lobaa dagha IDPs saraa keegee.
